: Cognito Leveling Kit Install Problem-Need Help!
msully 06-19-2005, 02:33 PM I finally received my leveling kit and went to install this am. What I found was the distance between the inner a-arm was 1/4" narrower than stock and I could not get the a-arm in to the upper a-arm brackets on the frame. The distance between the inner frame brackets on the frame is 12 3/8". My arms measure 12 1/8" from the inner point. I tried beating the new arms a little but could not get them to budge. I don't want to beat the frame brackets. My stock a arms measure 12 3/8" wide. Has anyone else had this problem?
Does anyone have these arms not installed yet? If so, would you measure the distance between the inner arm at the back of the a-arm/middle of the mounting holes and see what you come up with. My a-arms were part of a new production run that was just completed and maybe the jig was off a little.
Thanks,
Max Payne 06-19-2005, 03:09 PM You will find that in alot of aftermaket/fabricated parts. It sucks, but it happens. Cognito is a good company, get them on the line and they will take care of you.
8.1GASSER 06-21-2005, 07:30 PM Just take a hammer to your frame brackets they move with very little force...once you tighten the bolts back up they'll go back into place. I think just about everyone on here that has this kit has had to widen the pockets a bit...pretty common with tubular uca's.
BigWill_21 06-21-2005, 07:44 PM Yup, just widen the slots.... you will find this is common when you mix aftermarket parts onto a stock frame.. NO biggie!!!!
Once you tighten back down they will eb back to normal!!!

GMC2500HD 06-21-2005, 09:11 PM I used a number of Fabtech arms over the years and never ever had an issue with them at all. Never had to hammer anything, move anything like that, took them out of the box had them powder coated and then installed them... I would either switch or make cognito replace them with new ones to your exact measurements....
NorCal 2500HD 06-22-2005, 01:54 AM Cognito has great customer service....give them a call
I the kit I got was similar to MSully's. I used a BFH on the frame pockets and a dead blow on UCAs. I think they are made that way to keep things tight, I don't think it is a mistake!
8.1GASSER 06-22-2005, 01:08 PM its not a mistake...alot also has to do with the urethane bushings vs. the stock rubber ones.
msully 06-22-2005, 04:18 PM Yea, I called Cognito and they told me to beat the frame brackets to make them fit. When I told them their uca is 1/4" narrower than stock, they told me I was splitting hairs. They did offer to return them but I think I am going to try again this weekend. Thanks for your replies, I will let you know how it goes.
Diesel-N-Dust 06-23-2005, 04:30 PM Man that is crap! I was gonna buy a set of these until I read this.I dont want to buy anything that I have to beat on to make it fit.
I am a General contractor and our tolerances are +/- 1/8".
If a door frame is 1/4" off, the door will not shut.
If they consider 1/4" "splitting Hairs" Then they are a bunch of hacks!
Those control arms can be welded on a jig and come out perfect everytime.
They just are not trying hard enough.
msully 06-24-2005, 09:47 AM Cognito says all lift installers have to do some tweaking on most kits. I stopped by Sport Trucks by Dean in Moorpark(Jacked 2500HD on the front cover of 4 Wheeler this month) and they laughed at this. Rarely do they have to modify frame brackets or control arms. Dean suggests the 3" spindle lift from Fab Tech for leveling. What do you guys think. I am thinking of sending the uca's back.
msully 06-27-2005, 06:12 PM I installed my leveling kit today. A bottle jack was needed to expand the uca on the passenger side as they pivot points were not on the same plane. One of the bars was tipped in slightly. The frame mounts had to be tweaked substantially as well.
I am not impressed with the qc of these arms. Cognito says this is normal for their arms. I say they need to re-check their jig.
lilwes278 06-27-2005, 06:43 PM Well this definitely makes me re-think the idea of dropping the extra cash for the leveling kit when the green keys are SO much cheaper... I've also noticed Cognito has marked up the price of their Bilsteins substantially (compared to several other vendors). :(

That is one of the worst shops in Ventura County. Known for taking shortcuts!
ChevyManSC 07-07-2005, 04:46 AM I installed a Superlift 6 inch lift on a 2001 ZR2 blazer, and the kit had aftermarket upper control arms, and they were made about 1/2" too short and the tires bow in about 2 degrees i think is what the people that tried to align it said, I'm probably gonna send them back to superlift
