This one is mild steel. Not sure what the rest will be, but if they stay mild steel they will be coated. I'll get a price worked up when I get positive feedback.

Looks good. I was just looking at my cai today and was thinking something should be done with the intake horn as it looks like a huge bottleneck before the turbo even though I have done the intake horn mod.
Let me know when u decide what u will be charging.

Actually, a respirator kit for the LB7 is a good idea. Especially for folks like me who have been waiting on the sidelines.

Good looking new product. Wish I had it when I was replacing my FPRV.

Let me ask this. Wouldn't you want it to tapper down some to give it a venturi style intake to help speed the air flow to the turbo? Was just wondering if being open that big right at the turbo would cause the velocity to be slower than if it reduced some to increase it?

RickDLance
02-18-2010, 07:07 PM
OK, It's out!!

I have limited material on hand for these but more on the way. They will be sold first come first serve and are now on the website. ;)

Tester's have reported more turbo sound, faster spoolup, and more boost!

I don't think so. The tube has to simply be able to supply more air than the turbo can use. ;)

Thats fine. I did the horn mod on mine and I too noticed quicker spoolups and a more zippy throttle response...but not a significant gain, if any, in MPG and I drive 2-3K freeway miles a month and run the numbers on every tank. With that said, I would do the horn mod again but to spend money on it, I'd have to see some real world gain.

I dont think Rick designed this part to improve fuel mileage. If it does then thats a good side effect. This part quickens spoolup and gives a slight increase in boost. More than likely the benefits will increase as the horsepower goes up.

If all you are after is HP then perhaps. Me, I'm after economy and efficiency and thats why I did the horn mod and I am happy with what the mod yielded in turbo spool up and seat of the pant.

So here is one way you can test it but cant. Log how much air is moving past your air meter with a stock modded one. Then install Rick's. Log and see if you gained any more air flow. I don't think the lb7's read high enough as my stock one maxes out my lbs/per minute now. Or have it flow tested to see how much cfm it flows. Do the same with a modded stock one. Then see how much a stock IHI can move and that will tell you if your gaining anything. I don't see this mod hurting anything and if a guy dosen't feel like porting the stock one and wants something they can bolt up then by all means heres your mod.

installation instructions for Ricks air horn

step #
1-remove factory air cleaner piping

2-remove belt

3-remove 4 bolts that hold down A/C compressor and remove the two wire plugs and set the compressor to the passenger side of engine

4-unplug the two wire plugs over the stock horn

5-unbolt the stock horn(a long 1/4" drive ext. and a swivel makes this easy)

6-remove horn

7- check gasket

Install new horn step #

8-for ease of installation install the bottom bolt then install the horn onto the bolt then install the other two bolts( this horn is HUGE and is a tight fit but it does fit without other modifications)

9-install A/C compressor

10-plug in all wires that were removed (4)

11-install belt

12-install air cleaner piping

installation complete

smokindmaxdsl,

Have you done any other mods to the air intake system like CAI or intercooler tubes? I am trying to decide the order to upgrade my intake system, as I can't do all of it right now.

When you say much better spool on the turbo, I assume you also have less smoke, is that correct? I am trying to keep my performance while at the same time minimize my smoke output.

I put an S and B intake on a little over a month ago. It helped with the spoolup. I didnt expect a lot of results out of that, but it did help some. I have not done the intercooler tubes yet would like to do those. The main reason I put the intake horn on is b/c I have wanted to do the mod a while, just havent had the time. So I bought one from Rick. I run a 100hp tune with my efi live, it does not smoke unless you really hammer it. Smoke wise I will have to turn up to bigger tune and get back with you on that. I would like to know if it cleans the smoke up some. Lift pump is next for me, b/c I run out of fuel on my big tune. Hope this helps.

awesome product brother....you know the lower two slots on the horn. im assuming they're there to help slide over the allen head bolts once they're started in the turbo. what i did was i ground off a little bit on each of them(on the new intake horn) not alot, just enough so it would slide right down on the two allen head bolts in the turbo....then slapped the third in up top and boom....done.

i bet i could do another one in a little over an hour start to finish now that i know what im doing

I got this intake on my truck about 2 weeks ago and have been thrilled. The turbo spools up so much faster now. Awesome throttle response and I easily see 20 lbs of boost now with the only other mod being a turbo back MBRP exhaust. I tried porting the old intake, but at the price of this piece, why bother? I was having trouble too. I put both allens in the bottom holes, and sanded just a little on the bottom left slot on the horn side of the flange (I used a small 3" body sander with a 36 grit disc). Put the horn on the right side allen and it should drop or rotate down.
Great job on the horn Rick!!! She sure does spool a lot quicker now and EGT's are down too!

I also did this. That one corner just needed a little taking off but not so much that the head of the bolt doesn't tighten down on it. I however just used a chop saw and two sets of hands.

Looks like a great mod! Ill have to look into these when the funds get back to where I need them. Just not liking the sound of the install.

Hmm not bad even on a 500+ hp truck. I wonder what It would do on a mild tune stock truck... I am considering this solely for more turbo whistle. I think I am going to get a Banks CAI w/no scoop and see if that suits me. If i need more whistle this will be my next step :)

What are they if you don't buy the powder coat option? Will they rust?

I'd just prefer to sell them coated. ;)

Yea that's what I figured. If I decide to buy one I mine as well go all out :)
