I have an 02 LB7 5spd and would like to convert it to a 6spd possibly. How much power can the conversion hold power wise. All I have is a cai and exhaust. I would like to put a PPE tuner to it but keep it mild as I have a race car to go fast. My truck is used as ranch truck and to pull our race cars. So its primary use is to haul stuff including ass from time to time. I would like to keep my power levels under 500hp and 500 trq or around there. I know some people say that its not worth it to convert it, Im just tossing ideas around, and while hopefully my trans doesnt need a rebuild yet, it might as it is slipping. I figure if its going to get rebuilt I might as well add the extra gear. How much am I looking at spending? Any help would be appreciated.

Won't hold any more power then it already does. I would spend the money on a kit vs the 6sp, driving around the ranch and towing you will never use 6th gear anyways.

Might as well buy a truck with a six speed. If your looking for trans performance just upgrade the one you already have. For the amount of money and hassle you put in to getting a six speed on your truck now you can upgrade your trans for more power.

2k is alot cheaper than spending 15+k for a newer truck. Also I would like to keep it at or around 500hp and 1000trq sorry for the typo above.

Hey Jon, I have both 5 & 6 speed trucks, and I would just build up the tranny you have. It is not as hard as you would think, improved shifting, performance and towing is well worth the effort

1650 isnt that bad. If I am haulin race engines in the back of my truck down to Socal a few x an or go up to tahoe with sleds in the back that would almost make up for it. You guys are saying if I do this conversion I cant build up my trans to hold more than stock hp and trq?

I believe the statement is that the 6 speed does not hold more torque than the 5 speed, you can still build it up, with or without the 6th gear it will hold the same amount of power.

Ok that makes more sense. So I guess my plan will be to upgrade the trans strength and then plan to add about 1700 bucks more for the extra gear.
