Hi all,
Dont know much about these 6.5's or 4l80E trans. So anyways I was out salting parking lots in work truck and I lost reverse and am limited to a max of 2nd gear. What needs to be replaced? Should I just look for a used trans at a junk yard?
Think the truck is a 1996.
Thanksm,
John

that is dealing with something electrical. It defaults into 2nd gear. check the wiring out and all the plugs.

Low fluid level will cause a no reverse.
If you heard or felt a pop or a snap then the rear drum broke on you. If your salt carrying load is heavy and you were reversing and while going backward placed it into low you could be into some trouble.
If you didn't hear the above aforementioned then take a look at the linkage. Make sure it is adjusted correctly. I conduct a Pin to Pin inspection.
You could have a worn rear band. I think you would have experienced a slowness in engagement beforehand.
If you simply lost the direct clutches a take apart and replace will do you. However if fliud pressure loss to the piston is caused then an inspection will do.
You could of lost the overdrive roller clutch. The same applies: inspection

I was limited to 2nd gear and no reverse and it turned out to be my coolant temp sensor. Also it would shift great after i got a check engine light.

Glad your problem turned out just a coolant temp sensor. I learned something new today. I had no idea that the coolant temp sensor would affect the reverse. I wouldn't be in the position professionaly brick and mortar or on this board if I didn't listen. Keep us posted
