Stupid question but I've asked worse---bear with me.

Currently I have an 02 gas z71 with the pushbutton transfer case. There's a round button that says something like Auto 4WD or something. I normally hit it while going down the highway and things are starting to get a little slick.

The D/A I'm looking at also has a pushbutton transfer case but there is no round auto button----just the square 2h, 4h, and 2l buttons.

My question is can I hit the 4h button on the D/A while moving at highway speed on relatively clear roads? Just not sure what the difference is.

OK, I warned you this was going to be dumb. Thanks in advance. RR.

I think your Z71 is equiped with AutoTrac which is different in that it uses a wet clutch to connect the front and rear ends when in Auto mode, and uses the ABS computer to determine there is rear wheel slip and then proportions some of the torque to the front. It's a cool system, but it can't take the power of a Dmax, so they don't offer it. The Dmax just has an electronic shift transfer case, and yes you can engage it on the fwy (at a reasonable speed) to help in slippery situations. But it aint no AutoTrac...

yep, pushbutton transfer case is all or none... all 4 or just 2 but no "in-between"

You can engage 4hi on the road if you really need to but if the pavement is dry you are going to want to make sure you go back to 2wd before a turn. 4hi is not like the auto trac all wheel drive. To see what I mean put it in 4hi and try to make a turn into your driveway.
