Just returned from vacation with a 04.5 cc6.6 duramax that required its third power steering pump in 19,500kms. The pump was making a lot of growling noises that also got louder if a brake application was made. managed to get it to dealer who replaced the pump a couple of days later and funnily enough,by then the issue seemed to have self resolved. They still put in a new pump which is noisy also but not as bad as the one that was removed. I was towing a 5000lb boat, temps were cool but it does appear that the pumps run louder, after along hard run .Is this a problem and will it occur again. I also required an injector replacement for a misfire condition that occured as I was leaving the dealer. After losing an entire day of vacation to pump and injector replacements They tell me that it will probably require another injector replacement once i got it home.(no 8). Thats 3 bad injectors in 20,000km. This is not reassuring.Do these pumps have a cooler because i cannot find one. any help greatly appreciated..
Thanks Laker.

my truck makes alot of noise when turning if I am stopped and try to turn it is very hard to turn the wheel at all and they changed my pump also.I also noticed that when I exit the freeway after a long drive my truck fills and sound like somthing is rubbing or a powersteering whine at about 1300RPM as I am slowing down this truck has the worst powersteering of any chevy I have ever known

Thanks Socal,

Spoke to dealer and they were going to contact tac to advise them what to do with this. These trucks do not come with a power steering cooler on them which i believe is causing the extended highway speed usage whine .Your problem sounds exactly like mine.I feel the fluid is getting to hot and starting to break down thus causing steering and braking related problems. My hydroboost also sarted to cause the brake pedal to buzz during this Temp/fluid temp related problem. I will be looking at a power steering cooler to correct if gm gives me the normal operation scenario. Any techs out there advise on how to hook up a after market cooler? Help with this info would be greatly appreciated. As a side note daily driver usage has not been enough to cause the problem to return.
Thanks Laker:cool:

Do you guys get a whining noise from the power steering pump when you first start it up when it is cold? I just bought my 04 with 76000 miles on it and it just started to make this noise.

Crap, mine has begun do to this as well, after it is fully warmed up (never when it is cold) and you hit the brakes when the rpms are above 1000 it whines like a mofo, is there anything to do, do I ignore it, or replace it.

On my truck a power steering fluid cooler was added to reduce fluid temps as the fluid appeared to be aerating . The noisiness improved but did not completely go away. This noisiness occurs after a long hot run or a hot shut down extended hot soak with warmer weather.Once the fluid cools the problem self corrects.I feel that fluid temps are to high causing fluid break-down. I will try switching to a full synthetic oil in the summer if the problem persists. BTW fluid temps dropped an average of 20 degrees f after installing the cooler .The dealer fitted the cooler from a hd 8.1 it was a direct bolt in to our trucks.
Any other thoughts?
