: Wastegate issue?
Barely_Street_Legal 02-01-2010, 05:53 AM Hey all. I looked around in the troubleshooting section, but didn't notice my exact problem. I'm blowing lots of dark smoke about 2200 RPM or so and it drives really rough (but idles fine). I had just put on Health Diesels mechanical wastegate controller (set at about 2 1/4) and found some increased power I was missing (I don't think I was getting enough vacuum before). It drove fine the past few times I drove her (over a couple of weeks) then I started having this issue. I do not have a boost guage. Should the wastegate have any movement? I'm starting to wonder if it is stuck open.
How difficult is it to pull the turbo off and view it?
I appreciate anyones comments.
Green Machine 02-01-2010, 01:53 PM Since you have the turbo master installed, to make sure the wastegate isn't "frozen" all you have to do is push against the spring/rod and the wastegate should move. Also make sure you used the correct colored hole on the turbo master for your wastegate.
You shouldn't have to pull the turbo off to view it... You can just pull the intake tube off the turbo to view the compressor wheel. You can check for play and make sure it spins with no resistance.
Only true way to tell if your turbo is creating boost properly is to purchase and hook up a boost guage. Which I see is in your future already lol :).
Barely_Street_Legal 02-01-2010, 02:48 PM Thanks for responding. Do you know how much I should expect the wastegate rod to move? It doesn't appear to be moving at all. I assume I am expecting it to move away from tension (so toward the firewall-from the bottom; or in a clockwise fashion). Also, I had meant to indicate that the whistle from the turbo had increased in loudness at the same time, which made me think that the wastegate was stuck open. Too bad... it sounds really cool. I will give it a look after removing the intake tube and follow back up. What components make up the wastegate?... can it be fixed or is this apart of the turbo?

Follow up... I took off my dual cone filter and found a peice of the filter (inner chrome cover inside the center cone) blocking the entrance to the turbo. If I would have known it was going to be that easy I wouldn't have gotten disgusted earlier. Thanks again for replying.
ak diesel drive 02-17-2010, 08:15 PM when the wastegate opens it compresses the spring.
Green Machine 02-17-2010, 11:57 PM Glad to hear you fixed the problem with your truck.
when the wastegate opens it compresses the spring.
Thank you oh great one... to bad he already fixed the problem and there is more to the wastegate (with turbomaster installed) then just how the spring compresses. There is the actual wastegate components to consider.

Just clarifying what direction the arm should move Oh great Mod
lifteddiesel 02-18-2010, 01:22 AM hahahahahaha.... little kids.lol.. kidding... glad you fixed it.. mine was the same way.. but insulation in the turbo caused no boost and crappy idle crappppp fixed all better.... in the future put a mesh screen over the turbo entrance and clamp on then the filter.. that way nothing can get into it....

I like it... I will do that next. How much horsepower gain should I expect from the screen mesh? hehe...:D
WhiteK2500 02-18-2010, 07:28 AM You got your intake from SSDiesel I take it?
As for the wastegate, even though you fixed your issue, to answer your questions, depending on the model of turbocharger (your 95 would have the Gm-4) the wastegate is either actually built into the turbine housing (Like the Gm-4 and 5) or it is built into the turbine outlet elbow (Like the Gm-8)
All it is, is a little valve on an arm, that closes off a passage to bypass the turbine wheel.
It won't usually "stick" but if it had been allowed to blow open all the time, carbon could build up on the flat matting surfaces, and allow exhaust to creep by when it's suposed to stay shut.

Yep... got the intake from SSDiesel... Thanks for the insite on the wastegate.
JMJNet 02-19-2010, 11:12 AM Another SSD casualties. I thought he supposed to solve that problem, it was more than 4 years ago, there is a post about it.

Exactly what I was thinking... I didn't wanna be the one to bring it up though.
That's how I knew which intake he had.
mohawkmike82 02-20-2010, 09:33 AM Could someone post a link to that thread? I just ordered one.

I'm wondering when his SSD intake was built. I mine has no chrome ring, and the inner part is attached to the filter media in a way that the only possible way to get it to go into the turbo would be to literally rip the media apart or cut the media apart.

It's been three or four years. I've "pushed" it back into place for the time being. Has anyone come up with a repair for this filter?
JMJNet 02-20-2010, 04:01 PM Change the filter!!!

Just search it. I am not sure if it still have threads that far back.

Yes, contact Walt. He has an updated version that fixed the issue.
