I'm looking at getting a '94 1500. its a really nice truck with a 4" lift and 33's. Only problem is it has a stock 150K 4l60e. the motor is a new Goodrich turbo'd 6.5. I'd like to do a 4" exhaust and Heath chip. I also would tow a small tent trailer, or 3 place quad trailer. around here I can have a 4l60 e rebuilt for 600, and found a good TQ converter rated for 400 hp with a low 1200-1400 stall for $250. With what I want the truck to do would a 60e hold up? I'm fine with replacing it once, but if the motor will be tearing em up frequently I probably dont want the truck. what would you do?

I think the 4l60e would be fine for you,but I would stay away from that torque converter! Your diesel makes a lot of torque below that RPM band you are choosing to give away with that torque converter. Besides the "slipping" of that converter will produce heat, that isn't a good thing for transmission longevity for "truck" use. that was the lowest stall that I could find in a performance converter. I think that maybe TCI has one too that I'd look into.

Was the 6.5TD swapped in? AFAIK, and have seen, the only auto behind the 6.5TD in the Chevy pickups (and SUV's) is the 4L80E. Even a Tahoe with a ten bolt from the factory had the 80E behind the 6.5TD. NA's got the 60E though.

Not really sure, maybe it was N/A, and he swapped in a turbo version? It also has propane injection on it, but I dont think I'll use it.

I didn't think GM would put the 4L60E behind a diesel engine. It isn't meant for that kind of punishment, even in a half ton truck.

I have a TCI Maximizer torque converter behind my 383, which makes very similar numbers to a 6.5 diesel. I can tell you they very noticeably help acceleration, and give you more pep at the lower RPM's. :) They also have damn good customer service :D

OK, how hard would it be to swap in a 4l80e? I have access to a rebuilt one for cheap, but dont know if it will bolt up to the t-case. will the computer work with an 80e? Anyone done a swap like this?
