Hey all,
Work has an 04 GMC 3500 Dually/dump and also an 05 3500 dually/utility body. Both of these trucks have problems with the fuel gauge dropping to empty and the low fuel light staying on.This happens under normal driving or if the truck is parked on any kind of angle while running.
We have to take the truck back to the dealer to reset the light atleast once per week per truck.
Dealer says GM is aware of the issue, but has no fix.
Anyone else have this problem?
Is there a fix?

Are you filling the back tank? first. I know my truck fuel gauge will not read right, If I have the front tank part filled and fill the back tank. Once the back tank transfer to to front tank it reads right. All ways fill the front tank first.

I've had my '03 in the shop 3 times for instrument cluster problems. It started with the speedometer, then when they got that fixed about 2 weeks later the oil pressure gauge went, then the tachometer. Luckily the dealer covered it under good will, but still a pain.

I had the same thing happen a week ago I left my drag tank valve open when I left for work after about 160 mile the gauge fell to empty and light came on. It stayed that way till I got back home and refill the drag and cut it off and fill the main tank. I was told it was because it was to full and stayed that way with drag tank on. I have not left the drag on just fill as needed and it has not done it again.

Took one look at that stupid setup and promptly deleted the rear tank when I ordered my truck. No regrets!

Some years ago - when I worked as a Datsun Tech - Nissan had not taken over yet - the Portland training center had a Datsun 510 wagon that would drop a 1/3 rd of a tank while it was moving, then return to proper indication while it was standing still. They bought the car back when they couldn't find an answer to the issue. What they finally found was one of the metal wire loom holders was close enough to the guage that when the wheels would rotate setting up a magnetic field, the magnetic field would transfer to the that metal tang near the guage and cause the guage to move. When they moved the metal tang away from the guage the guage worked fine. They then used the car as a training car at the training center. That was a fun time...
That was around 1978 - there may be someone else around that might remember it, or the instructor - Allen "Ozz" Ozborne. He had a 78 Z car that took the land speed record for that class for about 20 hours. I guess 20 hours was better than not at all.:ro)

My 04 3500 has had fuel gauge problems also. Been back to the dealer 4-5 times on it.
Their latest solution is to fill up the tanks with the keys out of the ignition switch. The tech. said the switch needs to be in the off postion when the tanks are filled. The truck has had the commputer reflashed a couple times, a new cluster panel put in the dash & something updated on the fuel guage or sender with this problem. I will post a update if it quits again.

You didn't say if you had standard bed or utility? Went through all of this when my 3500 was new. Virtually every time I filled up light would come on and gauge went to empty. Haven't had problems since:
1. Key in off position. Service manager said it didn't matter, 2nd tech (different dealer) said it does, tech was right. Something about emissions recovery stuff.
2. Same tech (#2) rerouted fuel hoses. My front hose had a dip in it that prevented me from filling up front tank. (installed by utility body company) Fuel would back up and nozzle shut off even at slowest speed. I could only fill up rear tank leaving the proportion of fuel in the two tanks very uneven. Drive down street and fuel gauge light comes on, needle drops to empty. No problem now that I can fully fill up front tank.
First dealer kept truck for two days and supposedly dropped both tanks and replaced sending unit, 1st tech used same hoses and didn't see the problem. 1st tech said he couldn't find problem but replaced sensor anyway
3. Still have to carry a 4"x6" block to drive rear wheel on if slope isn't enough at fill-up site. I know at least one Fo@# guy that saw me and has his own block now.
