: Heath or....
melines 01-29-2010, 07:52 PM So i got a stock 97 6.5 it has a straight pipe thats it. I want some bigger balls ya know. So what about the heath performance gl4 upgrade computer? Just wondering if anyone has this and how it responds, and what it did to a stock 6.5? Or if you think there is anything better out there its about 400 bucks.
Green Machine 01-29-2010, 08:00 PM most of the "tunes" out there for the 6.5s are pretty similar with a few differences in them to make them "unique". If you buy a GL4, you won't be disappointed with the power improvement. If you buy a Kennedy's reflash, you probably won't be disappointed either. If you search through the 6.5 section you will see a few threads talking about reflashes and such.
The basic answer is, any performance tune you get for the 6.5 will increase power output. How much more power all depends on the truck and the tune :).
Pruittx2 01-29-2010, 08:31 PM You could just pop a chip in it,, But, your gains will be maybe 60% of what they could be, if you First, did a full 4" exhaust, and TurboMaster. You should get a set of gauges First. And do some Reliability Mod's first, then go for the power. Wheres your PMD?
HeavyDuty6Five 01-29-2010, 09:00 PM x2 on ^ response, you should def do mods that will be able to watch your power output, as increasing fuel and power will have egts soar. You defenitly need the 4in exhaust or even 3.5 exhaust min bc the exhaust will effectively lower egts by 150-200deg. Also you could swapt turbos and try the holset ones but before id get that far, id defenitly get the gauges, and exhaust and while your at it the cooling update, the duramax clutch and fan is great and i think you might have the HO waterpump and the dual t stats but upgrade to 180 t stats. Thatll keep engine temps in check. No Power comes without consquences so before you try to start reaping hp/trq benefits, you need to know the vitals of the truck. then id buy the chip from heath. i dont have an elec fuel system mines the db2 mech one but the principal is the same for what im talking about, otherwise too high egts and youll melt the pistons
melines 02-01-2010, 08:10 PM my pmd is still stock on the pump, i have no skid plates bec of my plow mount for the heath one, bet i have seen ones you can put on the intake. I have a 4inch straight pipe on it, but still have the stock 3in downpipe.
JMJNet 02-01-2010, 08:13 PM Please don't put PMD on the intake, that is the worst location from temperature viewpoint.
rustydusty1717 02-01-2010, 09:12 PM stock downpipe isn't 3". Most will recommend a 2.5" crossover and 3" mandrel bent downpipe.
4doorTAHOE6.5TD 02-01-2010, 10:13 PM Three inch exhaust is plenty.4in doesn't make more power.s Do get a good 3 in.aftermarket down pipe & 2+ inch crossover. 4 inch just cost smore, & is heavier.

3" is fine power-wise on the 6.5's, however my EGT's get quite high, even unloaded, especially with the chip. I can hit 1000 no problem with no load on. Wish I would have went 4" instead, would get much cooler exhaust temps.
matuva 02-01-2010, 10:31 PM 2.5" crossover + 3" mandrel bent downpipe added to your 4" line will do fine.
Add a AE3535XL aero turbine muffler and it really help your truck breathing.
Good injectors are a point to consider
A GL-4 will definately awake your truck. While you order your reflash, take the opportunity to mention you want a "F" setup, so you can get rid of the vac system and go with the TM.
A good companion will be the TM, or an *** or a HX-35 (though I don't know a lot about how to regulate boost on a HX-35)

melines 02-03-2010, 09:32 PM im pretty sure its a 3inch downpipe i just put it back on the other day when i did the heads. i have to figure out why it wont rev over 1500 rpm before i can do anyhting to it now :( anyone have an idea where to relocate the pmd?

Anywhere outside of the engine compartment is the goal. Most extend the harness by 6' or so, and put it up in the front bumper area.

before you go adding all kinds of power adders, i would pull the oil pan and check for cracks, the 97 model year 506 block was the most failure prone.
melines 02-07-2010, 01:15 PM its good just had the pan off when i did the head put new bearings in there to when i was at it
