What's up everyone,

Just wanted to get some opinions thrown out there on who makes the best air intake system for the new duramax.

I've heard really good things about aFe's Stage II kit.

Let me know what you all think.

GM makes the best intake. Do a search for the thread that SPICER started. You will get all kinds of info on different intakes.

Your best bet is to stay with a paper filter setup, so that you do not get oil sucked into the MAF......

The stock filter is usually adequate.

seeing this is a thread on intakes I have a similar question....And I dont feel I am hi-jacking this thread because he might wanna know this.

I was going to "cheese" the airbox last night and I noticed that the airbox already has a big hole facing the fender that allows plenty of air.

I dont see that it would get anymore air than it already is by drilling holes in the bottom of the airbox.

Hell, a replacement filter should do the same job....right?

I was wanting to know this too.
Will a drop in K&N air filter do?

I run the Airaid and am tickled to death with it, and talk about turbo whistle!!!!!

I bought a K&N intake, easy install, and have not had a single problem with it. I keep the Drycharger prefilter on it at all times. Get a K&N and put a prefilter on it. Looks great, and the turbo whistle is amazing.

:exactly: No problems with my K&N.

there were some tests done and the stock box performed same if not better w/K&N than the aftermarket stuff. the only reason most buy the aftermarket kits are for the whistle basically...thats why I did.

good luck

S&B works the best for my trucks. They also claim to meet or beat GM filter specs.

Running VOLANT system w/ homemade ram air add-on here:

I love that setup bodysurfer, and you are reminding me of my main question.

Just like your Volant intake, the aFe intake is circular allowing for 360 degrees of air intake.

Now is that better than the standard flat air filter?

Bang for the buck is stock airbox, but if you want the sound & look it's up to you.

Well the Volant (and maybe others) system intake tube is about 1/4" to 1/2" larger in diameter than the stock tube. Doesnt sound like much but just like stock exhaust as compared to aftermarket exhaust...about 1/2" larger. But that is a lot more area to flow. Always believed that you should upgrade both ends of a system (ex. air flow & exhaust flow). Dont get me wrong, the stock box is a good system but when you add programmers/modules, you engine would run better with a bigger exhaust and air intake. More in....more out. Runs cooler and gives that little extra. Just my opinion of what I have seen on my truck.

After reading that thread SPICER did on the diff. filters I am convinced for protection from dirt just keep your OEM filter!

I "wish" I could keep my oem filter BUT get the turbo noise that an aftermarket CAI does!

I think I am going with a MAC CAI for running around town and picking on the competition and when I hit the HWY put the stock set up back on for the protection.

Unless I can "homemake" me a tube the is bigger and better than stock using my factory airbox and filter!:ro)

Since the stock filter seem to due the job would it be benefical to chnage the air intake tube from the box to the turbo? and leave the stock air cleaner.

And if so has anyone done this? and where did you get the tube? did you see a performance difference on spool up?

I run an AFE stage II but noticed that the filter gets dirty quickly. I rarely go off road or through mud so it was filled with a whole squadron of bugs. I did however clean it out last night with a pressure washer and I did feel a difference with the turbo spool up and whistle.

check out www.trueflow.com air intake system. Looks nice, priced at $254, you get to keep stock box, use their foam filter and their mandrel bent tube.

Does anyone out their have experience with this product. Testimonies are positive on true flow website.

I did True Flow and noticed nothing. Also watch for extra oil in their filters.

Check out the eports on aftermarket filters such as K&N. Have read enough to make me wonder if the alleged results are worth the alleged benefits. Remember MARKETING is what it is all about guys. Do a google search and be prepared to do lots of reading!

I installed the OEM replacement K & N about a year ago. I've checked the system many times since installing this filter and so far - it's all clean down stream. I think the key is not to over oil the filter (hence sensor problems.) These filters may be guarenteed for ever but that does not go without maintenance on them. Good luck.

AFE Pro Guard 7 - not any louder than OEM (cut open). I all you need is turbo whistle cut the OEM box open at the front, cheaper too!

I watched a stock airbox and filter equipped LLY run 535 HP on the dyno without pulling the filter minder in, so I would say it is NOT restricting airflow.

Max Payne,

Seals the deal for me. :D The only improvement that should be made to the OEM box is to relocate it away from the right front fender in order to gain cool air versus very hot air. Check overheating thread for more intel. JJ :)
