: help please - cool down timer?
dnewton3 01-29-2010, 01:17 PM Quick question, all –
This really is a bit of an all-encompassing question, so I’m posting a couple of places because it really may not fit well in other sections. (It’s not a Maintenance question, nor a tuner question, and it’s not limited to just one engine generation, so bear with me please!)
Does anyone have detailed proof that stock Dmax equipped vehicles, whether all of them, or some of them, ever came with a Factory derived and installed “cool down” timer that would run the engine after you removed the keys and exited the vehicle?
I fully understand that there are aftermarket devices and tuners that might do this; I’m not interested in going down that conversation pathway.
I want to know if there is any year of Dmax that has a “cool down” timer feature as a stock (or RPO option) right from GM. If so, is it similar to the “high idle” feature we can turn on/off with some series of tap dancing on the pedals or using the DIC controls?
Or do you know of some GM derived accessory such as an “auto-start” key fob system that might have been dealer installed, that would have also had a “cool down” timer function?
The more details you can provide me, the better. Dates, engine codes, RPO codes, pages in the owner or shop manuals, etc. Please, I’m not interested in “I think maybe so, cause the dog breeder my BIL drinks beer with …” I want proof one way or another; not guesses.
Thanks in advance for any proof one way or another.

Well.......This is what I do i use the remote re-start feature that came with the truck, when i get out the truck I just remotly start the truck and it will cut it self off after 10 minutes
jrmsoccer32 01-29-2010, 02:08 PM To my knowledge there was never a factory option with any of the dmaxes that had a cool down timer. many aftermarket kits tho
Tanc Crusher 01-29-2010, 02:14 PM No stock cool down timer on any Duramax generation. I have not seen any RPO listed in any year of these trucks. But that is only 2500 and 2500 series. Unknown on 4500 and up setups.

rvjabo 01-29-2010, 02:57 PM MY REMOTE START HAS A FEATURE THAT I HAVE TRUCK RUNNING WITH KEY ON PRESS KEY FOB TO REMOTE START TURN Ign OFF REMOVE KEY TRUCK RUNS 5 MIN AND SHUTS OFF:confused:
robs67camaro 01-29-2010, 04:17 PM No
Brad92 01-29-2010, 11:09 PM As said above, either go aftermarket, or just let it idle for awhile then shut it off.
kcb37 01-29-2010, 11:21 PM No they don't.
I have a boost and pyro guage in my stock 03. Just exhaust as asfar as any type of drivetrain mods. For the most part when I get into a parking spot it's at a min of 400 degree's. Let it idle for a min and it will drop to 300.
If it's cold it will idle lower. (about 10 degree's mine idles around 200 fully cooled)
dnewton3 01-30-2010, 03:28 AM rvjabo - is that a "factory stock" feature, or an aftermarket or dealer installed start system?
And yes, I posted multiple places. I appreciate the board giving me a bit of slack for a few days. I'm looking for quick answers in multiple sections. Some people don't always view all the forum options, so to get as much feedback as possible, I had to inquire multiple times. My apologies for being redundant.
dnewton3 01-30-2010, 03:35 AM I appreciate the feed back. I'm aware of the need to let the turbo cool down if it's way hot.
The reason I ask is because I've been told (by as yet an unproven source) that all Dmax trucks have this "cool down" feature that when you remove the keys, the truck will continue to run. And the claim is that ALL Dmax's have it, and that it's a stock feature. In fact, the person that claims this feature exists, says that it came that way when he got the truck (presumably new?). He said "from day one" he has been able to get out of the truck and it continues to run after he removes the key and walks away. Also, I find it odd that he claims it does it all the time. If the truck were NOT hot, say from a short unloaded drive, then why have the truck waste fuel?????? To be honest, I think he's full of poo ...
I frankly cannot find any evidence to this claim, but that is why I'm seeking quick info.
I realize that there are aftermarket systems out there, but I'm talking about regular "stock" truck electronics, either as programmed, or as an RPO option from the factory.
I know that my 2006 LBZ does not do this, nor can I find any evidence of this claimed feature in the owners manual. You'd think that if a vehicle were going to run AFTER the drive removed the key, there would be some explination in the owners manual, so the owner would not freak out!
I know that my 2006 LBZ has the "high idle" feature that helps warm the truck when cold outside. And I know that particular feature is well documented in the owners manual. And I know that there is a process for turning that feature on/off at the drivers discretion.
The way I see it, one of a few things is true:
1) the guy is lying knowingly
2) the trucks (yes, he claims his small fleet of Dmaxs all do this) were ordered with some special fleet order code that us mere mortals cannot get or are aware of
3) the trucks have some aftermarket feature that he's enjoying, but does not realize that it's an add-on, and not factory stock
Tanc Crusher 01-30-2010, 11:14 AM I was thinking of fleet orders. You can do some very custom setups that way. But no idea if actually from GM or aftermarket. I say get the list of RPO codes out of the glove box and see if we can determine them all.

rpickett11178 01-30-2010, 01:20 PM NO There is no feature that come from the factory as a cool down timer the only way to achieve it is an aftermarket turbo timer for cool down or do as LW said me and my dad together have had every year d-max and none of the ever had that type of option
Diesel Dragon 01-30-2010, 07:40 PM No cool down timers from the factory on any year Duramax.
Paul Clancy 01-30-2010, 09:56 PM My recollection was the dmax was marketed from the beginning as having a turbo with a cooling system that wouldn't allow it to coke up.
rvjabo 01-30-2010, 10:29 PM Yes It's Aftermarket Remote Start. I Think You Were Talking About Factory Install And I Really Don't Know How They Can Be Programed On The Nbs 07.5 To 09.
Dwyer77 01-31-2010, 03:24 AM Negative on stock timers.... You could just watch your EGT's before you shut it down and if you were really that concerned about it use the remote start like mentioned. As long as youre not shutting it down at excessively high EGT's then it doesnt really matter with these engines and turbos, more just a peace of mind kinda thing IMO.
Here's a thread about aftermarket timers

crashpilot 02-01-2010, 06:24 PM Well.......This is what I do i use the remote re-start feature that came with the truck, when i get out the truck I just remotly start the truck and it will cut it self off after 10 minutes
Yep.. Me too!!
