I started up the truck this morning and its about 24 degress out. I had elevated idle turned on and i'm getting light blue smoke coming out the exhaust. I was just wondering if this is normal. It doesn't smoke at all when idleing normal.
its an 05 LLY 3500 with a predator programmer and 4in exhaust
thanks

same thing happens with mine. i don't think you have anything to worry about until its a really really thick blue.

Mine does it too. I leave it plugged in every night, all night. Still goes into high idle, smokes a bit. 58K miles.

24 deg Thats still warm out. Here we'll get below -22F (-30C) once and a while and it emits light blue.

All normal. A buddies LBZ (06) does the same thing.

Nothing to worry about.

Yep - normal.

Blue smoke.....work the hell out of it for a few hours, like a big heavy trailer pull.
Not sure if it seats the rings a little better, or cleans out the cat.
Seems to run better with less smoke and less cat stink after a good pull. Also seems to get worse the more it is idled.

The only thing that will do is keep the engine hot enough for a complete burn.....

ALL diesel engines will do it. The only exception might be DPF equipped trucks. Even then there is still "smoke", the DPF just catches it before you see it.

Its just the unused fuel because the motor isn't hot enough to burn clean. After the motor is hot, smoke stops because it's warm enough to burn everything. Has nothing to do with rings, working it hard or plugging it in over night.

Ah, cool. Mine is doing this too on cold mornings. It seemed to puff out a good light haze of blue for a while on high idle. It was 18 degrees out this morning. As stated above, once warm it goes away.

I see the "white" smoke too but that looks different than the blue smoke. I won't worry about the "blue" smoke as it seems others are experiencing it as well at cold start ups and my oil level isn't low.

It was 6 degrees F this morning when I started my truck. Whitish-bluish smoke bellowed for a good 5-7 minutes while it was warming up... then it completely disappeared. It's just the nature of the beast...

Yup, as Randy said its nothing to worry about. Mine has done it since new

Do you know if lb7s do it too? I've never seen my dads do the blue.

Vehicles without the CAT will smoke more than those that have kept it.

Makes sense.

I did check the LB7 this morning. It's been sitting outside undriven for the last 3 days. It was 16 degrees this morning and it did nothing other than regular "white" condensation smoke until warm, just like a gasser. Something is different or perhaps the cat like you said. Both trucks have about the same mileage on them, the LB7 has worked harder throughout those miles. Both run great!

I'll stop worrying since other LLYs are doing it too and it only happens when really cold out.

i get the light blue in hi idle also which sounds to be normal, but not to hi-jack the post or anything, but is it also normal that when its cold out like 15F or less when i've been driving civil for a while and get on it it blows out big clouds of white smoke? then if i keep rodding it it will slowly turn to black smoke and eventually stop blowing white at all? is it just condensation from the cold that eventually blows out or somethin? Thanks
