: Mileage VS tire type...Michelin - BF Goodrich
steakman 01-29-2010, 01:24 AM I am considering 3 different tires:
Michelin LTX A/T2 in a 285/70R17 (LRD)
Michelin LTX M/S in a 265/70R17 (LRE)
..and a
BF Goodrich TO KO 275/70R17 (LRE)
will I see a significant decrease going to the more rugged tire type.? BFG is the only one with an E rated tire in a 275 size although I am not worried about a D rated tire in a 285...lotsa capability...but mileage is impotent.! Love to hear from guys with the BF Goodrich tires on how those tires have affected mileage if at all.
275's will look goooood,!
opinions pls,
thanx
Newguy 02-01-2010, 11:32 PM FYI -
I just got rid of my Michelin LTX AT2 - as I was very unhappy with their winter snow/ice performance. The colder it got the worse they got. (like hockey pucks when it's cold... no grip = all slide)
The fuel mileage was good with them - I had 265/70/17. I was happy with them overall in every area other than winter performance.
I changed over to the Goodyear Silent Armor Wranglers. I know I'll take a fuel economy hit, but I can already tell the winter driving is MUCH better.
rtquig 02-02-2010, 07:10 AM I have just put on the Michelin LTX A/T 2 but haven't gone through a tank of fuel yet to determine whether they are better/Worse than the Michelin M/S. Will keep you posted.
steakman 02-02-2010, 04:14 PM I have a second set of steel Van rims that I use for the winter. Currently have 245's on em - from Canadian Tire ltd..Made by Goodyear so I figure they are a wrangler winter tire of sorts...been good, real good tires as far as I'm concerned. Great grip in snow and ice..which I see all too much of in the winter. May go with something similar for winter..but in a 265 this time. Still with winter fuel and those tires I still avg 18mpg at 70-75mph. Not too bad at all I figure.
For the summer, I'm pretty much convinced to go with the BFg 275's as they are the only ones that are Load range E and will look sweet.
thanx,
stk
lotsofmiles 02-02-2010, 04:26 PM you talking mpg milage or life milage?
I ran a set of ltx ms on my truck for 138,000 then switched them to the van, going to run them until they are bald or dry rot. When I switched them to the van I noticed it had a lot less rolling resistance. The tires I took off were almost new and load range d. They couldnt handle the weight.
switch to the ms2's on the truck.
I put the at'2 on the dmax van before I sold it, but only ran them 10-12,000. Liked them. not rated for as long a life milage wise.
rtquig 02-02-2010, 07:15 PM After 1st tank of fuel (381 miles, 3/4 tank) since putting on the 245 LTX A/T2 I'm getting 17.4 mpg which is about the same as before with the LTX M/S, but really 1 tank of fuel isn't enough to get solid mileage. I would think after 1K miles would be a good enough test of mileage. I never let the tank get below 1/4.

youve gotten over 138,000 miles out of 1 set of tires?!?!
lotsofmiles 02-02-2010, 10:04 PM youve gotten over 138,000 miles out of 1 set of tires?!?!
yup! got a mountian of free rotation & rebalance receipts to show for it too.
you have to remember, mine is 2wd and almost all expressway driving. thats got to help.
SMiller 02-02-2010, 11:40 PM BFG's are going to get the worst mileage because they will have the widest footprint meaning the most rubber on the ground to turn. Some have gotten a 1-2mpg loss when going to a 285 from a 265 but that is with a gasser, the mileage adds up over time, do you want good looking tires or mileage, your choice...
If you really want mileage and a taller tire go with some gay 255/85/16's...
For what its' worth, the Michelin M/S 2's in 265 have great traction around here on snow and ice. Lot's of sipes in the tires and glad I bought them. Took a hit in the mpg going from 245's to 265's around 1 mile per gallon.

While thats at the high end, while doing research on Michelins, a lot of owner stated they were 125K+ miles. Doesn't suprise me, I took my last set off at 80K and they had a lot of tread left, just getting cracks whick I wasn't confortable with.
crawlerhauler03 02-03-2010, 09:59 AM My dad got 119,000 out of a set of the original LTX AT's. Michelins are made for the road in my opinion, not too good in the rough stuff.
Well dayum. Guess I know what I'll be buying when the new cheap tires the dealer put on wear out.
steakman 06-27-2011, 03:04 PM To revive this post. I eneded up buying a set of BFG's. Well that was a complete flipping disaster of a decision. They lasted all of 75,000 Kilometers..barely 50k miles.!! Useless garbage. $1300 CAD for that mistake. NEVER Again.
Just found a set of 2010 (build date) of LT265/70R17 Michelins on kijiji up here in Calgary:
2 @ 40% left
2 @ 70% left
+ 1 brand new spare
$ 250 CAD.
Installed them on Saturday. Will never buy that other junk again.
