Has anyone tried this heater for the TDI? http://www.tdiheater.com/ She only has 1200 miles on the car but I know once winter hits she is going to be complaining! Looks like a good idea to me. We live in Canada and it can get very cold up here!

While I've never personally tried one, the general consensus
of those who have was that it doesn't make the heat come
up too much faster than without one.........basically it
only spoils the car, not the driver. These TDI's need to be
driven to reach proper operating temps.
I'd just hang an oil pan heater on it if cold starts
bother you. Using some good ol' Delvac1 would also help.

Thanks for your opinion RATDOC. It has an oil pan heater on it already. I was hoping it would get heat in the car faster. I am thinking it will be a real pain in the ass when it is -40, the windows are frosted up and the only way to heat up the car is to drive it with a window you can't see out of. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif It will sleep in a garage at home but not at work.

While I'll probably catch a bunch of crap for saying this,
try adding a product called Radiator Relief, by D.E.I. inc.
It's basically the same stuff found in Water Wetter, by
Redline, but in a much more concentrated dose, and is available
from Summit racing and a few others or direct. What it does
is speed up heat transfer between the cooling system and the
engine components......this not only helps things stay cool,
but also helps them reach operating temp faster. I've used it
in my '99 Suburban 6.5 with excellent results, but haven't had
the need to put it in the VW yet.......it doesn't get that
cold here on long Island and the TDI runs cool enough stock.

I'd have to say the tdiheater is the best thing I bought for the car. Last winter in NJ was was pretty darn cold by our standards. I would drive 10 miles to work with 5 -10 degree F mornings and it would get hot at about 9 miles. Not fun freezing my butt off the whole way.


The unit is nice. Pain to install with my fat hands butt I made it work. Circulates coolant through the engine and it's on a thermostat. I'd have it turn on 2-3 hours before I leave depending on outside temperature. It would heat up the coolant to operating temp and through out warm air right away. Just make sure to drive off right away; if you idle the temp will drop fast. After install it only takes one mile to reach temp instead of 9.


Now it doesn't sound like the John Deere on cold mornings. Also do a search for tdiheater on http://forums.tdiclub.com/ubbthreads.php?Cat=&C=2
