Got Diesel?

That it's bad to let a diesel sit for days without running it? I just read on another forum that someone said that someone else said that it's bad to let a diesel engine sit for days without running it. Something about the injectors getting gummed up. Is there any truth to the claim? I use mine to haul a camper and it may sit for a couple of weeks between outings.

Guess the ones sitting at the dealer for a month or more are all ruined then. Same must go for construction equipment, like dozers and such, and also larger boats/ships. They sit a while.

It can't be the best for them, but I would think that all of the above were designed for intermittant use.

in my opinion if you know it will be sitting for weeks at a time just make sure you use an additive in your fuel so the injectors get proper, if not better lubrication.

That makes sense. We do know that diesel can get thick if left to sit. It sure seems the high pressures in our system would free up any leftover residue or buildup, but preventative maintenance like briano is suggesting only makes sense. Keep the tank full to fight condensation (water) buildup and put in some additives like briano said and you have done whats reasonable I would think.

I am in the same situation. I pull a camper with mine. I have a company vehicle, so mine sits sometimes a week without being started. I do run fuel additive, though. So far, no problems.

I still have to look back at the dealer, they have trucks that sit multiples of weeks, and they seem to start and run fine.:)

I just don't get how anyone can let it sit for a couple of weeks without driving it. I go through withdrawls when I'm away from it for about 5 minutes.

I would be glad to use an additive, but I have read lots here about fuel additives and am more confused than ever about what is best to use. I got the drift that anything with alcohol should not be used, but I still haven't seen a consensus about a particular product.

I also don't think that the comparison with trucks on dealer lots is very useful. I'm talking about my truck sitting for a couple of weeks between use and doing that for years, not just months.

Mine is parked for the summer, so it doesn't get run much at all. I do drive it down the road until full operating temperature, and then run it back in the garage. I do this about every month or so during the summer months. I've done this since it was new, and haven't had any problems with injectors yet.

GM only approved two additives for use in the diesels..one of them is Stanadyne.. I forget what the other is..

Well... My first car was a 1980 Pontiac Bonniville with the 5.7L (350) Diesel. It sat for like 10 years, until we put batteries in it, cleaned up under the hood a bit, I think we gave it some fresh fuel, but we may not have.. don't remember. Anyway, it pretty much fired right up...

True, the dealership comparison isn't helpful in that respect. I do think construction equipment and boats are a decent comparison though. Scotty posted his experience as well which might give you good info to toil with.
