Hey just curious about putting a body lift on my truck do I need a steering extension or bumper brackets? or can I just put the spacers in?

the steering column will extend enough. if it becomes an issue you can drill some stuff out and adjust, can't remember the procedure. the bumper brackets, i've cut the back ones in half and welded them back together to make the bumper line up. front i never dealt with as i have a winch bumper. if you have an auto tranny, the shift rod needs to be cut and a bit of tube welded between to extend it an inch or so. transfer case shifter will adjust enough

oh, and your fan shroud doesn't line up anymore.

Oh so ill have to do some cutting to make the fan work? I got an auto tranny but lookin to swap in a manual.

most people swap in an electric fan, easier than modifying the shroud

Can I just find those at a junk yard or probably have to order it from a catalog?

If you're asking about the electric fans, you'll be talking aftermarket.

Assuming a 3" body lift:
- don't bother trying to mod the fan shroud, it rarely works out because part of the fan is below the radiator and drops your air flow at low speeds. It's best to lower the radiator if you want to keep the clutch fan.
- if I remember correctly, you have the saddle tanks on that pickup. You'll need to plan to cut/weld the brackets to raise the fuel tank or it'll be hanging below the side panels
- You can cut/weld the bumper mounts, but that becomes a pain - especially for the brackets that go to the side. Many people leave those out, but the bumper will flex and break over time. I find it easier to cut the ends of the frame and raise it all up. This solves loads of problems when body-lifting a K5, but a K10 is much easier (no torsion bars for the tailgate). Just make sure to gusset everything for strength
- make sure you use some sort of never-seize on the bolt threads
- not all transfer case shifters will work out. Some will require you to either modify the floor and shifter cover to allow for a greater throw, and some will just need to have the linkage redone.
- watch the transmission cooling lines when lifting the body (with radiator attached) off the frame
- steering will be a non-issue. You can get an aftermarket replacement with universal joints instead of the rag joint, but they are expensive
- do yourself a favor and put in poly bushings when you put in the lift pucks
- as stated, to keep the auto trans, you'll need to extend the shift linkage the same amount of the body lift (3"?).
- wiring harness should be a non-issue, but check the ground straps. I think on that year there is one on the firewall that you need to keep an eye on.

sledhead22 i put a 3 inch body lift and a 4 inch suspunsion on my old 85 k10 4x4 and i hated the body lift. lots of modifications fan shrould i had to cut in half and bottom half i could not use. and lots of other things also needed to be modified. the body lift i had to retighten the bolts all the time. when you would go around a corner the body creaked and clunk. if you are going to do a lift do a suspension lift you will like it a lot better

Well I got a 6" lift on it right now but I want to go higher without messing with the suspension. If I only go up 2" am I going to still have those same problems with the fan and those other things?

i think you will it will be very close . the fan will hit on the bottom of the shroud. you will hafto stretch the steering shaft there are two nylon plugs in the shaft that you will hafto drill out so the shaft will extend. the trans linkage rod you will hafto weld a piece in to make it longer you might hafto get longer brake hoses it will be close there are a couple other things that i just cant remember

I had a 4 inch susp lift on mine and then decided to do a 2 inch body lift. I already had on extended brake lines. When i did the body lift I took a sawzall to the bottom of the fan shroud and made it so it wouldnt hit the fan. also welded a short rod in the trans linkage, dont make it too long as your trans will want to jump out of park and into reverse. Kinda scary the first time your idling and start rolling backwards.

Careful as they dont recommend both susp and body lifts. I went over on the side with my K10, 4 inch susp and 2 inch body. Good luck

one other thing. i noticed on my 85 when it had a body lift is the speedo cab was tight along the body. i personally dont like body lifts due to taking away support. when i bought my 85 the box supports were rotted out, now yes i live in Wisconsin so i deal with salt every winter, but I THINK the body lift just didnt help any.

pic of my 85. 35's 2" suspension, 3" body. this will give you an idea about the fuel tank hanging down

you can build your own bumper brackets pretty easy

bumper brackets shouldnt be hard to do. my truck had just straight pieces of steel to raise the bumper. my truck has an aftermarket bumper tho
