I want to do a tranny fluid change on my 04.5 2500hd tomorrow. I purchased a Fram spin on filter at Advance Auto parts for my Allison Tranny. I didn't know how much tranny fluid I needed to purchase. How much tranny fluid will I need to use with my emptying of the pan and installation of my new spin on filter? Is it ok for me to use Dexron III fluid? My truck has 105,000 miles on ity and this will be the first time that I've done the trans fluid since purchasing the truck with 95,000 on the odometer.

I can't help on the fluid capacity, but I would only use an OEM allison filter. They claim the holes are specially towards the edge as after-market are not.

7 quarts if you drain what comes out of the drain plug. Why buy a fram when you can buy an allison as the above post mentioned.

I'm all for using an Allison filter, but can I buy them locally, say at Autozone, Advance, or NAPA?
I saw in my manual that Dexron III is recommended. Is that ok?

Search around, there has to be an Allison dealer around you somewhere. FWIW, a Fram I mean Fraud oil filter has 36 pleats and an AC Delco has 56 and the AC Delco is cheaper. How much did you pay for the Fram spin on because an Allison spin on is only about $11-$12 from Allison. Vendors on here sell them as well for about that price.

Throw away the Fram filter buy a Napa filter (WIX)
7 quarts for a drain and refill.
Dextron III is fine don't use Dextron VI. TES-295 if you want to switch to synthetic (TranSynd)
Look here for your local Allison dealer.

Check out the Napa (Wix Gold) filter. They have the holes located on the outer edge of the filter and it looks identical to the Allison filter.

I ended up returning the Fram and picked up a trans filter from NAPA. I put 7 quarts of Dexron III in it. After driving 10 miles I saw that it need more fluid. I ended up putting 9.25 quarts in. It is right in the "HOT cross-hatch" now after driving 20 miles at 50mph. Thanks for the help!

"Dextron III" is not a recommended fluid for the Allison.
Read your bottles very carefully before pouring them into your transmission.

??
Factory fill for model years 2001-2006 GM pickups was DEXRON 3.
Starting with 2007s, factory fill has been DEXRON 6.
GM Medium duty trucks used TranSynd.

What I used was Valvoline MAX Life DEX/MERC(for transmissions over 75,000 miles)
On the back of the bottle it states that it is recommended for use in vehicles requiring:
DM Dexron-II, Dexron-III, Dexron-IV
Allison C-4, TES295, TES 389
And many other brands of cars and trucks
I used 9.25 quarts total with a spin on filter change.
I guess my transmission is probably going to blow up now, but according to my 2004 GM owners manual (both the "Duramax, and Silverado" owners manuals) I have state that Dexron III is recommended. I hope I'm not in trouble!
