Hey Mudbug I have one of the old scanners not the new one with the big display it seems to work ok it does not get near as many parameters as the predator and on the cylinder balance it only shows #'s 1 & 2. It will read codes. If anybody else has any info please chime in.

Thanks rcr. I had read about these in Kiplinger Magazine and wondered. Looks like a feller could use a single device and do a number of different vehicles (gas and diesels) for < 1/2 the price of a Predator, assuming you only wanted the diagnostics of the Predator.

Correct. If you just want to read/reset codes, don't buy a Predator.

PS - If you want to be REAL high tech:

A cellphone/code reader/data logger all in one. Includes the cellphone for $365. From Eaton.

Mudbug, this scanner works really good on gm and ford if you get the enhanced upgrade but only on gasser's, parameters on diesels are very limited especialy psd's the chrysler does not seam to bad and imports may even give you less. You can upgrade the scanner over the internet. Once again though you get what you pay for, it will not do any abs or body controlers, or tranny computers but will read codes I thing all of them and will give a description.

Mudbug,

I have the EZ4000 unit and like it very well.

However, if you only have a Dmax then buy a used preditor for a code reader.

If, you are like me and need a reader recorder for multiple vehicles and brands, the EZ scan is the way to go.

Also, you can get upgrade credit if you want to go to a higher model.

Thanks to all for the feedback. I'm going to call these folks and see what's the latest. I've got the d-max w/no upgrades and my wife has a 99 Tahoe 4x4 that'll throw a code every now and then and then clear as quickly. I've yet to get the 1st error code or alarm on the d-max.

Thanks again.

Hey DavesDmax can you read injector balance rates with yours or do you only get cylinders 1&2 like me?

Dave -

I've been researching code scanners for my '03 Duramax 2500HD. I've been looking at the portable units primarily, and they all are telling me that the DMAX isn't completely ODB II compliant... meaning that it's "hit or miss" when retrieving codes reliably.

The EZ4000 is one unit I am considering. You indicated that you like it. But have you had any other DMAX issues that the EZ4000 was unable to read reliably?

Hope you can shed some light on this for me. I need a good scanner, portabl or otherwise, than will scan reliably.

Thanks!

The scanner works fine. However, it will not read the GM extended code set, (balance rates for example). I have not had any issues with the EZ4000 in being able to communicate with the truck.

I think the EZ6000 with the extended code set may be able to read everything on the truck.

If I had just GM vehicles, I would probably go with the EZ6000 and spring for the extended codes. Right now, I just need a good basic scanner/reader that would work with multiple car manufacturers. The EZ4000 does that for me and if I need more power in the future, I can trade it in and not lose the whole purchase price.

If I were to purchase just a scanner/reader for the truck, I would try to find a predator, as I think their capabilities with the DMAX will pass anything for the money.
