: Voyager vs Prodigy brake controller
beetee 06-16-2005, 09:58 PM I'm a new RV'er and bought a used 2003 2500 Silverado D/A EC 4WD with 14K miles that I pick up Saturday. I'm stoked about the truck. Also bought a nice used Sunnybrook trailer . A Takansha Voyager brake controller has been recommended. I know the Prodigy is 2 steps above the Voyager in the product line and have seen a lot of positive comments about it.
Is it worth the extra money or is the Voyager good enough.
Any thoughts and/or experiences with these controllers would be appreciated !
DavesDmax 06-16-2005, 10:40 PM The price for the prodigy is about $100.00 on the net and $10.00 for the plug and play harness to go to the truck.
I have had the prodigy since I've had my trailer. I bought it based on ease of use, mobility from one rig to another, does not have to be level to work, and all the recommendations on RV.net
I've never had a problem with it. I can put in my Grand Cherokee, (where it started), or use it in my truck, (where it lives). It, by far, is the best controller for the money.
I would not hesitate do get another.

Pwdr Extreme 06-16-2005, 11:44 PM Having used the voyager for years before the prodigy came out, I have thousands of miles of experience with both. The prodigy is hands down worlds better than the voyager, it gives constant even braking whether you are going up hill, down hill, or flat ground, the voyager would really grab the trailer brakes when going down hill, (like out of a driveway) and would hardly grab at all when going up hill. The prodigy has a self leveling feature (no need to adjust it, just set the braking strength), that alone makes it worth it in my book. I've heard good things about the one that hooks to your brake pedal via a cable (can't think of the name) but it is much harder to install and isn't portable between rigs.
Hope that helps!
Johnswiftm 06-17-2005, 08:30 PM Prodiagy by far is a better brake control than the Voyager. Theren is a few inbetween that are really good like the Primus controller. It is based on the same technology as the prodiagy. And so you know Cequent Towing ( Who makes Draw-tite, Reese, and Hidden Hitch) also owns Tokonsha.
SLEEZ 06-18-2005, 09:04 AM I also had the Voyager for a few years prior to getting the Prodigy. As stated above, the Prodigy is the way to go.
wild willy 06-19-2005, 04:35 AM beetee,
I'm envious of the Dmax and the Sunnybrook. For my 2 cents the Prodigy is the way to go. My son had a Voyager in his '98 GMC gasser (it was cheep). He has since traded in the GMC and picked up an 03 dodge.... and put in a Prodigy and it worked sweet two weeks ago hauling a jeep and three quads and equipment over Snoqualimie pass. Hands down the Prodigy is superior.
possum 06-22-2005, 10:34 PM I need to replace my brake controller, buying a Prodigy ... do I need to purchase a new wire harness or does Prodigy fit my 2004 D/A 2500 HD .. with factory trailer for 5th wheeler ? also, can I install it myself or does it take ahigh tech person ...
poppo3 06-23-2005, 11:18 AM Prodigy. Much, much better.
Tsckey 06-23-2005, 12:41 PM Possum,
If you buy a new Prodigy with the harness for '03 and later model year trucks you should be able literally to mount it to the dash (or wherever you choose) and plug it in. I was wary at first and a friend helped me. My face is still red. It was just as easy as everyone had said.

NOTNSUV 06-24-2005, 03:05 PM Just spoke with my RV dealer. He has the Prodigy and likes it but mentioned the Excursion for a bit less money with added features including circuit protection if someone were to connect jumper cables backward. He says that bone-head move will fry the Prodigy and others. Any experience with the Excursion?
Thanks.
idahofox 06-24-2005, 06:54 PM Reversed jumper cables would FRY more than the Prodigy. IMO.

NOTNSUV 06-24-2005, 09:38 PM Yeah, I would think there would be other more expensive concerns with that scenario than a $150 brake controller. Like the hospital bill for the guy who did that to my truck. :badidea: I set it up in Butte to have the Prodigy installed before I get the truck. No sales tax in Montana donchaknow.
