: trailer brakes not working?

I have a prodigy brake controller. It is showing a short at idle, and an over load when the brake is pressed. I have running lights turn signal and brake lights. the square box on the trailer says fully charged, I think that is part of the breakaway system. I just picked up this trailer yesterday, it was just built. http://www.appalachiantrailers.com/DECKOVER.htm

I also checked the CHMSL fuse and it is good

I would check the trailer's pig-tail to see if wired correctly for the 7 pin connector.

The prodigy is almost full proof.

I probably don't need to tell you this, but that's not right.

The above recommendation is where I would start.

Like Dave said, check you pigtail wireing.

Check you controler on a different trailer.

Doubt that it is a fuse problem.

Good luck.

Quite often trailer manufacturers will not follow code. You will likely need to change a few wires around on the trailer. Talk to the manufacturer they should be able to tell you exactly what you need to do.

Providing they use proper wiring colors there should be a blue wire for the brakes and it should go to the terminal marked 'blue' in the plug.

One other thing you need to check is to make sure you are getting a good ground. For example one directly to the frame. 90% of the problems are from a bad ground. Also what plug is on the trailer. If it is a six way plug and you are using a Hoppy 7 to 6 adapter there is you problem. That adapter is wired so the elec. brakes are on the centerpin not outer pin S.

I hooked my truck to my neighbors trailer and everything worked fine. I have the factory GM hitch and wiring on the truck. So it has the standard 7 flat blade RV Plug. The Trailer has the same type of plug no other adapters, This wiring runs into the brakeaway battery, wiring box.

Chase the wires from the brakes foward. When you open the 7 way plug the brake wire should be hooked to the blue connection. If all is good then you have a shorted magnet. The easiest way to find that is to cut the wires on the brakes at the brakes one at a time till you don't have the problem anymore. Then there is the problem brake magnet.

Take it back to the dealer, if it's new they should fix it.

IMHO.

Yes, do what idahofox said and take back to the dealer.

You have a wiring problem on the trailer and the vendor needs to give you a working trailer before sending you on your way.

They forgot to hook up the wiring for the brakes in the junction box. I also relized they forgot the relective strips on the side. All is fixed now so I'm happy:ro)

Glad you are ok but for information this same problem you had on a trip south we had. the problem was the rear brake wire running though the dexter axle was bare and touching the medal and causing the same codes.
