: what tranny do I put behind a retrofit Cummins?

I have a 1984 Chevy full-size Blazer that I plan to go diesel with since I have to rebuild the gas burner that's currently in it to get it going.... I'd rather go diesel. From what I've read and been told in this forum, I should go with a Cummins engine, but what I need to know is which transmission should I use behind it. I'd like to stay automatic with the Blazer, so should I use the 47 from a dodge and get it to fit my transfer case or is there a way to adapt it to a 4L80E from a GM vehicle? Which is easier to upgrade to handle the power I can get from the Cummins? which is cheaper... if anyone knows?

Thanks

JP

I have been gathering information to so something like this myself and here is what I have found:

If you are going with a 4BT (my preference for a Blazer), then you could use either a slightly "built" 700R4 or a 4L80E (stock). Any Cummins dealer can sell you the Cummins to Chevrolet bellhousing adaptor. The 4L80E is electronic, so it will require a transmission control system. These people http://www.powertraincontrolsolutions.com/content-4.html have a stand alone completely programmable control for the 4L80E.

I believe that if you are going to use a 6BT, then you should stick to the DC 47 and transfer case, a manual Dodge trans and transfer case, or an Allison 1000. For a 4x4 Blazer though, I think that a 4BT, a 700R4 with an upgraded locking torque convertor, and transfer case from a 88 to 90 K2500 is the way to go for simplicity and cost...

I hope this helped.

Yep that haelps.... the hard part for me thus far has been to locate an affordable Cummins 4 cyl... everything I seem to find is a 6 or a four that someone cares way too much about for me to get for my rig... any suggestions?

Go with a 6bt with a 47re tranny, a guy that belongs to NW BOMBERS .COM converts chevy's to cummins and if you want with the 6bt you can build extreme amounts of hp and torque and still get good mpg. If you go to www.nwbombers.com look for a guy named 24VCHEVY you can get all the parts to convert your truck through him.
