I am not sure were I should post this but I want to ask everyones opinion. In June I will be a first time father of twins. My wife and I own a Duramax extended cab with a 8 foot box. I would like to know what guys think, if I should get a cap or just go with a tonneau cover. Obviously if we all go out in the truck and its raining or snowing out all the "stuff" that we will need for the kids will get soaked. Just thought I would throw it out there and see what everyone thinks.

Anything that locks! Nothing is worse than worrying about unsecured crap in the back of your truck.

Personally I can't stand the look of either, but there are some companies that make really low-profile ones that lock, and are hard to notice.

Being that kids stuff can be bulky and take up a lot of room. I would say the cap is the best bet. By cap, I mean a camper top. Covers look cool, but aren't as functional.

i have used both and i like the soft tonneau cover just because if i ever need to haul something large, i can just roll it up and when i am finished, it keeps the bed dry again. i usually lock the tailgate and there is no access to the latch

First off, congratulations on the twins!! Soft tonneaus are not secure. Anybody with a sharp object can slice it open to check out what you've got, if they're so inclined. I HATE caps, so the next best thing for me was the ol' Jack Rabbit. Roll-n-lock is nice, but mor 'spensive. Retrax has a great reputation, but it's very shiny. Good luck.

I am a fan of the cap. My reason...I too have a kid on the way (just 1...not twins) so the car seat + all those necessities will take up the back seat and I'll have no room for the dog. Nor would I want my hyper 80lbs Lab in the back seat with my kid. Some caps have options for a seal that goes around the sliding glass rear window, so you can open the window allowing the dogs to see whats going on up front, and the kid in the back seat.

Congrats on the twins!! Although I feel a bit sorry for ya. I figure the first one has to be tough enough. But two...;):D

Gotta ask how you use the truck. I had this same debate a few months back. Looked at a cap, a hard tonneau, roll ups and on and on. I ended up with a Extant Solid Fold tonneau for the following reasons.

1) I needed to be able to remove it, I would say about 20%-30% of the time I do not want it on. The Extang removes in about 2 minutes and leaves NO rails or hardware behind.

2) I do not have a garage so storing and lifting a cap or hard tonneau was not a good option.

3) Needed to be able to remove it on my own without help. The Extang weighs about 40 pounds and is folded in thirds. Easy to remove and carry for one person. Plus it can be folded and left at the front of the bed leaving the back 2/3 un covered.

4) As long as you have a locking tailgate it is secure.

5) Visability is increased without the cap.

Don't have anything against any of the other options, just sharing why I made my choice.

Congrats and enjoy!

Caps are nice and do everything a tonneau cover will do but I bought a truck and want it to look like a truck. If I liked the look of an SUV I would have bought an SUV. I have the soft tonneau for my truck and it works very well with kids. Trust me I have 4 boys their ages are 8, 7, 6, and a newborn. We are able to get all the junk in the bed out of the weather but when needed we are able to roll it up and use the bed for hauling whatever. Go with whatever you like, both do the job!

I just had my 3rd girl yesterday. I have a fiberglass top for my new truck and had one on the last truck. I love it with the kids and 3 dogs, i build a shelf in the bed for the dogs to ride on and slide all the stuff under it. When it comes time to haul something tall I have put 4 hooks in the roof of the garage, I back in the truck and unclamp the top and I use my back to lift up one end and slide a 2 x 4 under it then the same on the other end then use straps to pick it up off the truck then just drive off. I do the same to put it back on myself and with all girls I do not get any help.
