: Code 18, and others...

I am dreading where I think this is heading, but after searching the forum, I have some questions....

Driving on the highway 75mph SES comes on and I loose power, not all, roughly half. I exit, pull into work, and check for codes.

18 19 35 36 54 85 91 92 93 94 95

It had been 20k miles since I checked. Cleared them all as in FAQ

At lunch.

Truck starts, no light. Drive a quarter of a mile SES comes on, more detonation noise, poor throttle response. Pull over check codes.

18 54

Drive a couple of miles check codes again

18 35 36 54

Clear codes and drive like I am a fuel mizer, very light on the throttle. No codes, no problems for 15 miles. Never went above 1600 rpm or 40mph.
Get into it again, and I get the light and above symtoms agian.

I cannot find much on code 18 (pump cam reference pulse error). I briefly read FAQ on the IP and see how the fuel solenoid is controlled in response to throttle and a variety of other factors, and am figuring that I don't see the light when driving easy because I am not requesting a lot of fuel.

What triggers code 18? Is it a sensor that I can replace, or does the code come with 35 and 36 because my fuel solenoid is on the way out?

Thanks for any help you guys can give

What fuel were you running? When I put in veggie oil that was too dark I'd get DTC 18, 54 because the optic sensor couldn't see. It did just as you desribe and "diesel" loudly and lose power.

I'd get the cylinder imbalance codes when the filter was plugged solid with glycerine and sediment from the grease.

The problem surfaced on grease, but continued as I purged while finishing my commute. In 25k miles I haven't had issues like this due to grease, but the thought did cross my mind. I typically change my filter ever 5k, and did it last week 1000 miles ago, but I do have another with me. I'll change the filter for the trip home tonight.

Optic sensor is lo res track is the code 18.
CTime Long/Short and balance codes means the Fuel Solenoid is taking a :knight:
Basically its pump time.

You hit the nail on the head. Thanks for the insight.

I typically ignore the Ctime long/short codes on the earlier truck, especially if I veryify the C time to be less than 2.0.

There is a possibility that the electronics of the encoder may not like being fed such warm fuel along with the cloudiness mentioned previously. Only time will tell.

If you are going to run grease, I'd recommend a very large filter before the OEM unit...

As for filter, I am running a Racor 1000FH with a 2 micron element.

You should run a 10-20 micron prefilter if you want to run a 2 primary or it will clog up in no time.

I was running 10, bought online. I needed a replacement in short order, the CAT dealer across the street only stocked 2, tried it and it still lasted 5000 miles. I am prefiltering to 1.
