: Spot mirrors
CRANKSHAFT 03 06-16-2005, 09:47 AM Another newbie to the board -
Anybody out there found a decent spot mirror that doesn't use up all the existing mirror or block the turn signal in the mirror? I'm very entertained with this website, but this is a tow vehicle not a drag-racing truck.
Benny Long 06-16-2005, 10:13 AM Look at thihttp://www.powervisionmirrors.com/index.htmls web site .. I think are the one making them for GM
Shrdlu 06-16-2005, 11:00 AM Also, consider aspheric mirror overlays. http://www.multivexmirror.com/

I think he said he didn't want to block the turn signal on his mirrors. I used a small round convex mirror and put them on the outside of the signaled mirrors but not covering the signals, they seem to work pretty good once you get used to them being there.
I use a product called "Spider Eyes" and they work pretty good. They have a very wide field of view but things really get small quick so if the another car is much past the end of your truck you have to look hard to see it. Waiting to see how it works when towing.
briano 06-16-2005, 12:27 PM Welcome aboard, make sure you read over the forums and post in he correct sections.
Thanks, enjoy the site!
Big Papa 06-16-2005, 12:30 PM Crankshaft03-- I just bought some of the auxillary mirrors from powervisionmirrors.com for my dads 04 HD. They attach to the outside of the mirror so as to not block any mirror surface or cover the signal. Check them out.

Just ordered the multivex mirrors for my truck after reading this thread. Thanks guys...

JAKE BRAKE 06-16-2005, 01:05 PM Wal Mart carries a convex mirror that is 3" by 3" and is shaped so it will fit on the inside corner of the mirror. I put them on my camper style power in and out factory mirrors and they work very good. Not expensive either.
Shrdlu 06-16-2005, 02:31 PM From the Multivex site:
"MultiVex mirrors may be mounted directly over "heated" OEM mirrors, which will transfer the heat to the MultiVex for defogging and defrosting.
"MultiVex mirrors may be mounted directly over high-intensity "LED" signal arrow mirrors, while retaining the signal arrow function, because the reflective coating on the MultiVex is semi-transparent and the signal arrow shines through."
poppo3 06-16-2005, 11:44 PM I found a 3" concave mirror that is ADJUSTABLE from Kragens. Works very well on the inside corner of your mirror.
jim_bo 06-20-2005, 12:17 AM So, who has the MultiVex mirrors?? They look awesome! Anyone have an opinion?

Great, Let me know how they work for you, I'd be interested in getting some too.
wwpiga 06-23-2005, 09:14 PM The important thing to remember when istalling spot mirrors is to put them in the part of the mirror you don't use.
I have found the the inside lower corner is not good that is where I look when backing a trailer.
The upper outside corner is the part of the mirror I don't use and it gives the the best viewing of cars in the blind spot. Mine don't interfere with the turn signal.

I did the same thing and had them on for about a year now and work good for me also.
FWIW
txguppy 06-28-2005, 10:19 AM Well, I got the Multivex mirrors yesterday. Installed them and went for a test drive. WHAT A DIFFERENCE !! These things are great. Two drawbacks though. One, the turn signal don't show through. Second, the cheesy double stick tape pieces. The instructions say to put a bead of silicone caulk around top and vertical sides, so I did. I would highly recommend this. Another potential problem I see is the whole mirror being stolen. The position angle with the Multivex mirrors sticks out considerably from the housing. All in all I am very satisfied.
DuckhunterInTN 06-28-2005, 11:31 PM Just to let y'all know, I found a spot mirror that works well with the factory extending camper style mirrors. The mirror is made for an 88-98 GM truck, and is made to go in between the factory mirror and the door (on the arm of the mirror, about where it pivots to fold). Well, if you take this little mirror and place it on the outside edge of the camper mirrors below the turn signals they look pretty good (they are sorta curved like the mirror) and don't block any of the turn signal, which was my big problem with using a round spot mirror.
I found these mirrors at Autozone for about eight bucks.

Ok, I'll try to get some by friday.
BlueOx03 06-29-2005, 05:31 PM I got some good half moon ones I mounted to the bottoms of my full feature mirrors, I'll try to post pics this weekend when I'm home.
killerbee 06-29-2005, 05:59 PM I would like to enhance the rear view! I loved the ones out of the 70's, big. My mirror can't view the entire back window in a CC, and that's sad.
Any ideas on better rear view mirrors, that's an overlay I would buy!
watersampler 06-30-2005, 03:59 PM i have a set of camper style mirrors from the factory and i don't like them . has any one tried a set of aftermarket mirrors and how did you like them
killerbee 06-30-2005, 05:34 PM if anyone is ordering the drivers side overlay for the heated folding (LT) mirrors, use part 33053LH. It is not clear or obvious on the multivex site. That mirror appears to be the same as the esc/tahoe/yukon. The 10" dimension is wrong. It is actually 10" diagonal, confirmed with multivex.
Wayne Dohnal 07-01-2005, 02:19 PM Another Multivex camper mirror report.
I got the Multivex mirror for the passenger side only. I've never had a problem seeing things with the driver side mirror. I've used various spot mirrors on the passenger side, and while they're an improvement over the useless stock mirror, they make the other cars look too small and too far away for my taste.
The bottom line is that I consider the Multivex mirror to be a huge improvement. It solves the problem, and it's a keeper. At the inner edge the contour is mild enough that sizes and distances are distorted about the same as with the convex mirrors on most cars. I can adjust it down a little so I can see the wheels on the trailer and still monitor traffic with the same setting. A few inches away from the inner edge the contour becomes progressively greater to pull in a wider field of vision. At the outer edge of the glass you can see pretty far to the right and the objects are pretty distorted. But you can see if something is there or not. If you try to focus on the outer edge it will drive you batty. Multivex includes instructions to focus on the inner edge and let peripheral vision take care of the rest. This works.
As previously noted the mounting tape is cheesy. The problem is that they're using flat tape to mount a curved object onto a flat object. They could really improve things with some custom adhesive mounting pads. I (hopefully) improved it a little adding small amounts of my own tape where their tape didn't touch the mounting surface at all. The instructions say not to worry, that it will stay on OK. The turn signal arrows are not completely obscured, but greatly reduced in intensity. During the day the arrow can be seen if somebody is looking at it, but it will not draw any attention. In the dark I think the arrow will be noticed but it's nowhere near the shocking bright that it is uncovered. Multivex could have masked the silvering to let the arrows show through. The turn arrows are nice, but I bought these mirrors to have visibility when towing a trailer, so I have no problem giving up the turn arrows for a mirror that's usable as a mirror.
BlueOx03 07-05-2005, 09:10 PM here's a pic of mine, I'll get some better one's if you guys want...

And how do they mount? Double-sided Tape?

thay clamp on to the lower edge
jim_bo 07-09-2005, 10:40 PM Hey Donnie/BlueOx,
How much are those spot mirrors? I looked at the website but did not see a price or a way to order.
I bought the Multivex mirrors. I installed just the one on the passenger side. It works great, but I have a few complaints:
1. The edges of the mirror are not finished well. The reflective material is chipped away all around on the edges. Looks tacky.
2. The tape is just silly. It looks like what it is, a mirror taped on top of my stock mirror. Has anyone figured out how to do some trimwork or something to make it look nice? The directions talk about black silicone. I bought some, but I haven't tried it yet. It looks like a terrible mess waiting to happen.
3. They are full of crap about the LED turn signals. They are just gone.
I am thinking about sending the Multivex mirrors back and getting the spot mirrors that Donnie and Blue Ox have. They probably don't work as well, but at least they don't trash up my $40k truck!!

jim_bo 07-09-2005, 10:43 PM By the way, Blue Ox. The mirrors on the website are shown on TOP of the stock mirrors and they look stupid. Your installation looks nice. Any problem seeing the passenger side mirror? The bottom of the stock mirror is pretty close to the bottom of the window.

WAskier 07-11-2005, 12:48 AM The best spot mirrors I found are the ones attached to my Schafenacker TTT towing mirrors. They are $$$ but well worth it in my opinion. With these mirrors there's almost nothing I can't see behind or to the side of me.

I did the black silicone on 3 sides with Permatex 598B gasket maker which dries flat black. The end result makes the Multivex mirror look somewhat like it belongs there or was there all the time. You're right that this could be a terrible mess. I used masking tape on both sides of the bead, and put some foam below the really wide parts of the bead. I did the top on one day and each side on other days. And the top needed a 2nd application because of sag and shrinkage. I smoothed the silicone with my finger so it's not a perfect job, but it's not too bad, either. I ran the silicone about half-way onto the mirror edge so it covered a lot of the ragged edge you mentioned. A lot of hassle, but worth it to me to FINALLY have a real mirror on the passenger side.
radron 07-11-2005, 08:38 PM Donnie 1, your truck looks awesome got some questions for you. 1. what size are they. small or medium 2. how do you order from safe driving .do you contact the representative from safe driving ? thnx radron
Donnie 1 07-12-2005, 12:02 AM Thanks
they are the medium ones.
call 1-800-800-4920 or 1(570)992-5754
if no answer leave a message they will call you back.
pt536 07-12-2005, 01:36 AM I started out with the one glued on to the OEM mirror and a few months ago added the one on top, thinking it would be better and I could get rid of the glued on one. Each has its advantages, I am going on a long tow this week and will make up my mind which to keep for the long run.
Donnie 1 07-12-2005, 11:32 AM put it on the bottom, so you can see your trailer tires when you turn a corner.
also gives a good view of whats beside you.
spot mirrors belong on the outside bottom corner.

I thought about that when I was mounting them. However when I tried that I didn't like the way it looked as the spot mirror is not flush with the mirror housing and I though it looked dumb. That is why for now I have kept the stick on mirrors as the let me see the trailer tires and also the truck rear tires.
BlueOx03 07-12-2005, 05:14 PM Here's where I got my from for 39.99 shipped
http://www.hondadirectlineusa.com/stores/product.asp?pid=2308&str=4&ID=494848227
I've bought two sets from them with great service:)
I never even thought about putting them on top, it would just look goofy and like stated before, they belong on the bottom.
To get them in just the right place, I shaved the raised plastic piece off the top of the spot mirror. then I clamped the spot mirror to the mirror body and marked the mirror body where the whole for the clamp is in the spot mirror. I took the spot mirror off, then cut a hole in the bottom of the mirror body for the clamp to go through the spot mirror and the mirror body. Once I had it all tuned in, I had my bud paint it and then I put it all together.
If someone in my new location, southern Mississippi, would like to do this mod I'll be more than happy to help and make a how to...

ok BlueOx, I just got a set of these using your guidance, now i need a little assistance. :)
any help would be apprecieated. The metal bracket that is attached to the little mirrors has me puzzled. I will have to look into it deeper on sunday since saturday is pretty much booked up.
by the way, these look awsome!
aztowbum 08-27-2005, 01:12 AM I don`t tow anything so I don`t have a problem on the right side. I bought a 3 inch convex and put it in the lower left corner of my drivers side mirror. It eliminates the blind spot on the left side with a vehicle in the next lane. Works for me.
PA24Pilot 11-06-2005, 06:45 PM I have had my Multivex passenger side mirror for two weeks now and what a difference. I always felt blind on the passenger side, just could not see what was along side of you very well. Tried the small spot mirrors and they helped but were not the answer either. I did fill in the gap between the stock mirror and the Multivex with silicone as per the instructions. I masked the front of the mirror and the top edge of the stock mirror so I would have a neat edge to the silicone. Looks like they were intended to be that way. The turn signal brightness is way down, but they are still visible in the daylight but don't jump out at you like stock. I felt it is a small price to pay for the greatly expanded field of view. Forty three dollars delivered is a lot less cost than some of the other alternatives.
Wayne Dohnal 11-06-2005, 08:40 PM I agree 100% with the previous post. I used spot mirrors for a couple of years, and they were way better than nothing, but I had trouble changing focus between the spot mirrors and the flat mirror. Since I've had the Multivex mirror on the right side towing the 5th wheel is a lot less stressful. If these were stocK I don't think we'd see masses of people spending hundreds of dollars for different mirrors.
robabner 11-08-2005, 06:27 PM I am considering the multivex and was wondering a few of you who have them have said the coating is chipped around the edge, any thoughts on trying to rub off some of the coating over the turn signal to allow more of the LED to shine?
OneSilverTruck 11-08-2005, 10:26 PM robabner....... Ditto!
I have a 2" round on my passenger side now, and its ok, but not good enough. Got a 1" round adjustable on the driver side and its fine.... I ordered the standard mirrors, but when they delivered my truck, it had these camper monsters on it.... Maybe the General should pay for the multivex!!! LOL
03BlueHD 11-09-2005, 08:52 AM Those of you with the Multivex, any pictures?
drhutch 11-09-2005, 11:11 AM Just ordered a set of the safedriving clampons, we shall see. Just too bad those folks with degrees that design things for GM don't have to get behind the wheel and see just how they work..:( If they just looked around and take the best of all worlds I think they could come up with something that looked good and actually would work pretty well under most situations.
txguppy 11-09-2005, 11:27 AM Those of you with the Multivex, any pictures?
PM me and I'll send you some. Haven't figured out how to put pix in my sig yet.

I've thought of this but haven't followed through. The web page says they are "first surface coated", which to me means the reflective coating is on the outer surface. I was thinking of using some kind of soft round pad in a Dremel tool for each turn signal dot, maybe in conjunction with rubbing compound. Maybe someday I'll have the guts to try it.

Wayne Dohnal 11-14-2005, 01:36 PM Got my Multivex today, and plan on installing it tomorrow.....Any advice???
I thought the way the tape squares were stacked was kind of mickey-mouse because there was so little actual contact between a couple of them and the old flat mirror. I used some small pieces of similar double-sided foam tape to add little stairsteps to some of the stacks for more contact area. Don't know if it actually helps, but I feel better about it. It looks pretty bad if you don't use sealant to fill the gaps on the top and sides. I did the same thing that pa24pilot did, and mine looks the same as his picture. The new mirror looks like it was meant to be there all along. I used some black silicone Permatex gasket maker for the fill. It's not high gloss. It took a couple of passes where the gap was large. Sealing the edges was a pain but it's been trouble-free since. Being able to actuall see things on the right side makes it all worth it.
