Okay, here's a project I have in mind, and I could use some advice/suggestions. I'd like a vehicle that's 4wd/awd, diesel powered, get's around 30 mpg, can haul up to 4 passengers, and is roomy enough that I could sleep in it comfortably.

Some ideas I've had so far: Chevy Blazer with a Cummins 4BT, Toyota 4-Runner/Land cruiser with a 4BT or Mercedes 5 cylinder Turbo Diesel, Subaru wagon with a VW diesel (I know of someone here in Boulder doing that conversion right now).

Any other ideas?

I can weld, and have access to a milling machine and lathe.

Oh, and I guess I should mention: money is a big issue. I'd like to do this for under 10k.

Thanks for the help.

How much can you get a 4BT for?

Can I ask why -- seems interesting.

Thumbsmasher,

Great topic, a 4WD 30MPG diesel utility vehicle for under $10K.

For Toyota diesel conversions, try Toyota Diesel Madness: http://www.toyotadiesel.com/phpBB2/

If you get any info, links or photos of the Subaru/VW conversion post 'em. Same with Blazer conversions.

I checked out the Subaru-VW diesel conversion the other day. He's got the engine out of the Suby and the VW engine on the garage floor, and he's trying to figure out what to do next. One look and I realized it ain't gonna fit -- not without some serious modifications to the suby's front end. The inline 4 is way longer than the horizontally opposed suby engine.

But this guy is determined to make it happen, and I imagine he will eventually. As for me, no way -- too much effort (and frustration). I'll keep looking for other options. However, if/when he ever gets it done, I'll post some pics here for grins.

Just scored a free mercedes engine. 5 cyl, 3.0L, na. It may need a rebuild. I'll tear it down and see. I'm thinking maybe now of an older style Cherokee or 4 Runner. I like the Cherokee because it has 4 doors.
