: underbody protection...
DURAtotheMAX 06-15-2005, 10:34 PM Hi everyone... in the fall I will be headed off to St. Lawrence university in Potsdam, NY (wayyyy up there). Because of the incredibly long winters up there, I hear the roads are usually pretty aweful in terms of salt, mud, snow, slush, etc... and I am starting to think and become paranoid for the well being of my truck's undercarriage. (rust-:t ) I am going to keep my truck forever so while she is still new, I would like to do some preventitive stuff before any damage can start. I already have my diesel engine winter covers all set to go for the -20 degree mornings:D...anything else???? I remember those little electric boxes that used electrolosys (or lack thereof) to send a charge through the metal of the truck to prevent rust...do those work at all? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!!!

smshiver 06-16-2005, 12:14 AM I got talked into the dealer undercoating at delivery, and although the cost is mostly dealer profit, I really like it. Quieted the interior a little, and no sign of any deterioration. Not too much salt here, though.
PS: Loving that Luxury Bose ;)
DURAtotheMAX 06-16-2005, 07:54 AM Steve if you dont mind sharing, what was the general cost of your undercoating?
thanks--- Ben
aka108 06-16-2005, 11:28 AM Just give the undercarriage a good fresh water wash down periodically. Undercoating can trap a bunch of corrosive stuff and may not be the best avenue to follow.
what was the general cost of your undercoating?
thanks--- Ben
For reference, local Dealer was going to charge me $250. Called the outfit directly, and they only charge $125. Any cleaning is extra, so if you've been running your truck for a while and its not showroom clean underneath, they'll charge extra. Local line-x shop up here also does undercoating. I think they charge $175 plus cleaning.
I ended up not doing anything and plan to use a garden sprinkler to clean the bottomside. Wasn't sure what the undercoating would do the wax stuff on the frame, and all my old musclecars with undercoating have rust under the coating and I end up removing it all anyways.
_MJB_ 06-16-2005, 11:56 AM You can't win versus the road salt and debris that they spread on the roads here in upstate New York. Best bet is to do what I do: Put the nice truck away for the winter and buy a cheap "winter rat" car or truck.
drlvegas 06-16-2005, 01:17 PM First rent & watch "Fargo." Then go get yourself a heckuva deal on that undercoat from your dealer. Yaaa.
smshiver 06-16-2005, 03:26 PM My undercoat was about $175.

Not if you live by the beach then the rust is a big problem.
RichLube 06-16-2005, 08:29 PM Relatives in Canada have talked about an oiling service they use on an annual pre-winter basis. Anybody have any first hand experience?
ticki2 06-16-2005, 08:43 PM I've been oiling my undercarriges for years and I think it really helps . Not a cure-all but probably doubles the life . Bought a cheap undercoat gun from JC Whitney and use bar and chain oil . I wouldn't use used motor oil as it has corrosives in it from the engine . Six months of the year here ALL vehicles are white
idahofox 06-16-2005, 10:18 PM I sprayed the frame rails on my Big Trucks with diesel fuel in the winter. Soap and water washes it right off.

who'd you have do it? i'm starting not to trust some of these local guys (auburn)
RichLube 06-27-2005, 09:23 PM Penetr-oil is the annual oil coating they use in Canada. Does anyone have any personal experiance with this product.
smshiver 06-27-2005, 11:20 PM nosliw,
I bought my truck at Valley GMC in Auburn and I thought they did a good job on the undercoating. I went for the NW protection that had the interior protection and clay bar paint treatment and have been very happy with how well it has held up for almost two years.
If you elect to go there, PM me and I'll send you contact information.
