: Oil In Exhaust
Sea Wizard 01-14-2010, 10:07 PM I need help! I just installed the banks power pack, Banks Intercooler Cold Tube and Hot Tube Kit and by passed the crank case vapor line to a oil vapor filter. I have a banks intake, LBZ mouthpiece. I plugged the MP vapor line as well.
After driving the tail pipe has oil coated on it.????? WTF?
What is going on?
Dmax1989 01-14-2010, 10:39 PM ??? Can you post pics. Soot is common, but ive never heard of oil. I don't even know how that would enter the exhaust unless the turbo took a dump.
Sea Wizard 01-14-2010, 11:23 PM I will try and get pics. This is black liquid. maybe condensation. but I have never had condensation before. Soot IMO is dry this is definetly pooling.
I am going out and looking at this again.
Thanks for commenting.
Sea Wizard 01-14-2010, 11:57 PM just went out to look at it again. Definetly oil. I took the hot side coupling off up by the resonator and it had oil film on it as well.
When I changed the Intercooler tubes out I made cetain all connectors and tubes were clean. I also sealed up turbo inlet and outlet during modifications.
see attached picture.
How would I tell if turbo is blown. I haven't abused truck. I sat in my heated shop for 3 weeks while I did modifications in spare time.
Would the PCV reroute cause this? I am baffled????????????
duramaxdiezel 01-15-2010, 12:43 AM Im also experiencing the same thing. I realized it when i used 2.5 quarts in about a week
Dmax1989 01-15-2010, 08:38 PM How many km are on your truck? I have read on here that the pvc system will, over time, suck enough oil into the intake that it will fill the intercooler. But then again, the engine would be burning it up. The only thing i can think of is the turbo, not sure how you would check it. Its in a a-hole of a spot.
duramaxdiezel 01-15-2010, 09:45 PM i got about 185,000km. and i took off my intercooler tubes off and they were clean. im sure its seals or o-rings gone in the turbo causing oil to end up in my exhaust.
Farmboy51 01-15-2010, 10:19 PM Take your intake tube off and see if there is any freeplay in the turbo shaft There shouldn't be any. If there is oil in your exhaust it should be blowing blue smoke like there is no tomorrow. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!
Sea Wizard 01-17-2010, 10:13 AM I rerouted my PCV and this is when I started experiencing oil in the exhaust plus alot of blue smoke.
I put the PCV back like OEM and to my surprise no more smoke.
I am going to see if the oil in the exhaust goes away. This will take some driving time. I don't drive my truck all the time it sits in the shop. But I am going to drive it this week and see what happens. My guess is the oil in the exhaust will go away.
Will keep you posted.
azoilburner 01-17-2010, 12:41 PM you didn't by chance route your PVC to dump into the exhaust?
Sea Wizard 01-17-2010, 02:28 PM No, I ran it to a oil vapor separator and then to atomsphere.
Hooked back up OEM and no smoke and looks like no oil in exhaust.
Go figure?????????:)
Dennnis 01-17-2010, 02:38 PM Any chance your new oil vapor separator system was clogged?
JC1843 01-17-2010, 03:28 PM Maybe the oil separator is not large enough to handle the flow from the engine which would cause a restriction and excessive crankcase pressure. If so, it could blow seals or gaskets.
What happens when you just let it flow to the atmosphere, and not to the separator?
Sea Wizard 01-17-2010, 04:50 PM I thought that same thing. I haven't tried that yet. I was glad to get it from dripping oil out of the exhaust and eliminating all the smoke!:D
I am going to route the PCV to the atomsphere and see how it reacts.

My guess as well, they need to vent. I haven't done the re-route but would suggest just venting to atmosphere instead.
jlawles2 01-17-2010, 07:07 PM Is it oil, or is it soot dissolved in water?
How long was it on the oil separator? Was the separator full when you pulled it off?
Sea Wizard 01-17-2010, 08:34 PM it was oil dripping out of the exhaust tip, muffler and every joint on the exhaust system.
Blue white smoke during midrange and idling.
Oil separator was not full. I think my oil separator was too small. I am going to hook up the PCV by pass again without an oil filter. I am going to let it vent to atomsphere and catch oil in a temporary can.
Shadow1 01-17-2010, 08:49 PM I just have my PCV rerouted with 1/2" tubing that vents to the atmosphere along the driver side frame rail. After 2 years of operation there is only a mist of oil around the tubing end.
If it has ever dripped oil I've not noticed it.
