Looks like I will need to replace my vaccum pump. What brand should I go with... or avoid for that matter. Thanks!

Just avoid the vacuum pump completely, it is only used to run the boost control on your truck, so get a manual wastegate, then eliminate the vacuum pump and get a shorter belt (there is a thread here (http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showpost.php?p=3650433&postcount=3) about how to do it).

If you do want to keep the vacuum pump though, i would go with a GM one.

Yeah, if you want to keep the vacuum actuated wastegate get a vacuum pump from GM. I would have liked to keep the vacuum system, just to see how well it performed.

What is the problem with aftermarket vacuum pumps? Anyone have a bad experience?

To my knowledge only GM makes/supplies the vac pumps new. The remans seem to be of dubious quality & short life.Simplify your life & do away with the vacuum system. Buy a Heath/ Kennedy Turbo Master & drive happy .I did! PS the vac pumps will strand you if it comes apart. The serpintine drive belt will need to be replaced with a shorter belt also.

FYI, vacuum pump price is more expensive than TM from Heath Diesel. TM will not break down again. With the vacuum turbo system, a lot of part can go bad: Vac Pump, Turbo Solenoid, Turbo Wastegate Actuator (the diaphragm can leak) and vacuum tubes. All these parts are replaced by a single mechanical spring.

It is up to you?????

I'm gonna stick with the pump for now. What is the difference between the AC Delco 12556549 and 89017558 part numbers? Both are said to fit... but which is correct for my truck?? I know the van ones and the 95-older are different. I want to get the correct one. Thanks!!

When I searched the 12556549 part number it took me right back to the 89017558 part number... I also thought both the 94-95 pumps were the same as 96+ pumps. Just the way they are removed/installed are different, but i guess i could be wrong .

Let me know if you need a new, Turbo Wastegate Actuator, When I bought my truck there was a new one in the bed tool box,, I looked under the hood, and the vac pump was still there but there was a TM installed instead, I think the PO got the part, and couldn't figure out the problem he was having , and bought the TM instead. I have searched for a new Turbo Wastegate Actuator for kicks,, and found a new one with a price of over $200 bucks! :O

Wow, that's a pricey little guy! Mine seems OK. Holds vacuum, so it should be good.

Hello. i m new on thid forum and I'm from Slovenia (Europe). I just bought '97 Chevrolet Tahoe 6.5TD 183hp and I have a problem with vacuum on my turbo. i have no vacuum at all. When I drive it it doesn't smoke not a little bit. My mechanik thinks its a vaccum pump.

I have another question.

What is a divice circled on the picture no.1?

Picture no.2:
I have this device in this position all the time. What would happened, if I pull it up and fixed it to be in upper position all the time?

Thank you for your help and answers.

# 1 is an EGR Valve, you have an S code engine, check 8 digit in vin. #2, the wastegate valve, you don't want it open all the time, you will have a hard time controlling boost, you have two options, replace your vacumn pump(check to make sure its not making vacumn first, could be lines) or two is to get a reflashed F code computer, and put a turbomaster on, block egr port or get F Intake. That would give you some more ponies. Make sure you don't have any pollution laws to comply to over there before you do that though. Good luck, and read FAQs on this, lot more info for you.

Thanks for information! I found those 2 pictures on this forum but I have same engine (checked 8 digit and it's S). The problem is that in Slovenia I can't get those parts because it is not many american cars here.

waste gate open,, would be Wasting your boost, That system is to protect the engine frome Overboost. Try this test:

When the engine is running,, the wastegate, should be Hard to open by hand. as the vacuum system should be holding it shut. If it opens easy, then theres a vac problem to the wastegate controller. Either bad pump, broken vac lines, or bad wastegate solenoid, either way, it should be setting a code. Go here to learn to check and read codes: http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16399

With everything stock,, it's hard to hear the turbo. A more open flowing air cleaner system and Exhaust system, helps to hear the turbo better.

Welcome to the forums, it's great to see some Europian folks here, with help and info from you, We should be able to help you get it running Great!!

I've seen the intakes for sale between $40 and $80, also you would need to get your ECM reflashed, or find an F code ECM that would match up... however you might than have problems with that anti-theft system relearn.
