When I try to start it, it sounds like metal gnashing (HORIBLE NOISE). I figure it must be the starter shims. Do I need the long shims or do i just need a shim on the outer bolt. I forget which does what.

I just recently had to put a new flywheel in mine. The forward little bracket ($2.00 at the dealer) had fallen off creating up and down play on the starter. Does your engine start, now? If so, get it fixed before you crank on it anymore.

Did you just replace your starter? Is so then you need to adjust the clearance between the flywheel ring gear and the starter. I use one piece shims that cover both bolts.

If you haven't replaced your starter then your starter drive on your starter has failed.

I will move this to the 6.2L section for further viewing and posts. I think that is the appropriate forum for this type of question.
