My block heater has been tripping my GFI the last few nights. It's been in the single digits here for a month or so. The truck was plugged in from about 9pm to 7:30 this morning. The code did not appear until I left for lunch today. I took it to O'Reilly to have the code read and they told me it was P0181. Do you think I have a bad heater block cord or something else? To add, it not only trips my GFI it does at my parents house when I plug in there as well. I was using different cord at both places so I ruled the extension cord out. I also cleared the code and it has come back on but has not been plugged in.

I don't know what the amperage draw is for the truck heater, but if I remember most GFI's circuits are 20 amps. Try plugging it into a non GFI'd outlet. Can't help you with the codes.

Thanks for your input. I figured the amp draw and it's only 25% of what it is rated for. I also know what the code is, just didn't know if there was something else going wrong. I've plugged my truck in for 4 years when it gets under 40 degrees and these issues are a first for me especially tripping the GFI. I thought with them coming in a group something else might be up.

maybe the block heater cord has bare wire exposed? it should be in a plastic wire loom but anything can happen. try tracing the heater cord back and just give it a visual inspection. also have you tried switching the outlet's at your house, i know it happens at your parents house also, but they both could be faulty. just a thought.-Sean

Are you using the front grill cover?
Have you tried removing the Edge module system to see if it continues?
The cold seems to do with intake air and fuel temperature difference to great is one possible reason. No idea if there is really a fix. Only thing I can think of is with EFILive to disable the DTC code.

I wish I had a grille cover, so no it isn't on there. Also, my Edge has been removed for some time because it was killing the truck for no reason. I have switched outlets and extension cords to no avail. I just traced the block cord and rerouted it to remove a shorty extension cord I had on it because it wasn't quite long enough. I did that before the code when it tripped the GFI the first time thinking there was some corrosion within the plugs.

Since you have it unplugged I would disconnect the big plugs the Edge plugs into and see if all pins are fully seated in both. It is possible one has slipped out or just barely connecting. Other than that not much else I can think of other than to the a place that can diagnose the problem.
