: Tranny no go and threw a code
chuntag95 09-11-2003, 01:00 PM I left for work and dropped my son off at daycare. I was leaving the subdivision and when I tried to accelerate, the truck acted like is was slipping badly. I stopped and tried reverse, which again barely moved. It threw the SES light. I had the wife come back and pull me back to the house.
Since I had put on a larger transmission cooler, I decided to restore it to factory before calling the tow truck. After putting the factory cooler back on, it worked just fine. The two codes were 700 - transmission control system malfunction and 747 control circuit step error. Of course, I sent my pred off yesterday to get it updated, so I had to go to Autozone to get them read.
The larger cooler was turned 90 degrees to the OEM due to having different fittings. I had to adapt to hosebarb and back to an AN -12 fitting. The in line was on the bottom and the out was on the top of the larger cooler. The overall height of the cooler was not any higher that the OEM cooler, so I would expect gravity to be a problem. Is th larger volume of the new cooler increasing the head enough to stop the pump of the Allison? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif I have fittings being made so I can put the new cooler in the same orientation as the OEM, but they are not due for a couple more weeks. Is it coincedence that I changed back to the OEM and the transmission started working again? I don't think the hose or cooler are restricting the flow as both are bigger than the OEM cooler and lines. I also thought the cooler returned to the pan, so how would the pump be effected at all? Am I "vapor" locking they system? I do have the new NSBU switch. The engine and tranny had not come to operating temp yet. The other time it did a no go, the NSBU was replaced and all was well again. HELP!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Dead.gif
Mackin 09-11-2003, 01:21 PM How long was it in operation, after install ??
Reduced flow due to addition restrictions ....
Drop in line pressure ,limp mode ....
That's my guess ....
Mac http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
chuntag95 09-11-2003, 01:32 PM It's been running about 3 Weeks since the NSBU switch was changed and it was on a couple of days before that. Since the NSBU fixed it last time and the cooler was never off, I thought it was coincedence. It appears that might not be the case or I need to "prime" the cooler or something.
I thought limp left you a gear? I guess it was in 1st, so down one is nuetral? Edited by: chuntag95
Shutting it off and turning it back on probably reset the ECM/TCM. Not necessarily putting it back to stock.
Could be flow restriction. Ask dmaxalliTech
chuntag95 09-11-2003, 03:01 PM I did ask Eric and he gave me the diagnostics for the code, which is a solenoid in the tranny. He said he didn't think my cooler had anything to do with it. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Thumbs Up.gif If the solenoid for 1st is sticking or weak, that might also explain why I get so hot when in stop n go traffic.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
Mackin 09-11-2003, 04:05 PM That would be great if you could cure your HOT issue ...

chuntag95 09-11-2003, 05:24 PM You ain't kidding brother. Hopefully it will be cheaper than what you had to pay.
chuntag95 09-15-2003, 12:48 PM Took her in this morning. I did remember to ask them to verify the transmission temp on the dash vs. the tech II.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif Now I hurry up and wait. Anybody want to join me in a round of the Jeopardy theme song?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif
dmaxalliTech 09-16-2003, 12:22 AM Chris, get me all the info you can on what they find. I have someone that would like to see it. Ask them to be as detailed as possible and maybe even get some snapshots of it, or if they can print out the freezeframe data from when it failed... you could email it to me?
chuntag95 09-16-2003, 06:51 PM Eric,
Will do if I can. Right now, I don't think they are getting very far. I have not been able to get any info out of them.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
Chris
chuntag95 09-16-2003, 07:00 PM Wouldn't you know it, as soon as I post I don't know nothing, they called. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif The story is they are waiting on a tool from Kent Moore for the thransmission. They need the tool to do a TSB that they think is my problem. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif Eric, have you heard about a TSB on transmissions not going or falling out of gear? I have asked for the TSB number and they said they would try to get it to me by tomorrow. Whatever the "problem" is, it is supposed to be ready by tomorrow. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
sdaver 09-16-2003, 08:03 PM chris good luck with your problem......keep us up to date.......by the way I dying know about your skull cup holder.....dave
chuntag95 09-16-2003, 09:01 PM http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif sdaver, $4 bucks at Autozone and it hooks to the A/C vent. Solved my need for a 3rd cup holder and looks cool too. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif If you put Mountain Dew or Dasani in it in the daylight, the eyes glow green or blue. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Shocked.gif Keeps your drink cold with the A/C blowing on it. chuntag95 09-17-2003, 05:43 PM Well, this is getting better all the time. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Stern Smile.gif I was told the mystery tool will not be in till next Tuesday. I guess it's made from unobtainium. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wacko.gif To top it off, they still didn't give me the TSB number like I asked. It sounds like the right rear bearing is going out on the S-10 I have for a loaner. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif I am trying to be half full, but I think I'm going to be sick http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Throw Up.gif
dmaxalliTech 09-17-2003, 06:45 PM ~~I wonder what it would take to put a rolling mechanic service togather for D-max's.... I could make a fortune!!~~
Mackin 09-17-2003, 10:59 PM I dunno dude ....
Seems to me their blowing some smoke ... We dropped, entirely stripped a tranny (Allison) Minus pulling the rear (ball) bearing assembly without one special tool to empty cases, including dis assembly of the valve body ...Including NSBU to the driverside dip stick tube hole plug we don't use ... Whats left ??
I've pulled a TCM for OD lockout install no special tools either ....
If I had my Allison service manual here I could list all the special tools they say are needed .....Mostly needed for tear down ... Is your tranny out of the truck ??

dmaxalliTech 09-17-2003, 11:05 PM The tool used for the tsb for drainback issue is just a rod with a u-shaped notch in it so that you can push in a valve and insert a pin to hold it in. A screwdriver will work the same way... As Mac said, no special tools needed for anything that they can do for a warrenty concern..
Mac, Did you guys take off the nut on the back of the trans that uses a spanner socket, looks like 4x4 socket for older chevy's? I had to modify a 4x4 socket to fit. Did you pull pistons out or just clutches? It sure would have been nice to have that L-shaped bracket that bolts to the pto cover area to hold that shaft in so it dont slip out of splines and make it not go togather, or didnt you have trouble with it? It took me another set of hands cause didnt have it or make something.

Yes the nut must come off to remove the tail section ..... No the Piston is untouched,we are servicing only fixed clutches and rotating assemblies ...

Sounds to me it's timew for a face to face with the service manager. And then if needed the General Manager of the dealership.
There is not excuse for them not returning your calls with the information you asked for and they promised.
chuntag95 09-19-2003, 02:08 PM Well, well, after my call this morning when I asked him why he was avoiding me and not giving the info on my truck, I got a call back. Seems they are not working off of a TSB at all. The one they looked at was not for the Allison. It's probably the one I found as well. Seems they are working through the 747 code diagnostic. They got stuck at checking the line pressure because they don't have the gauge. They ordered that and the solenoid tool (to save their screwdrivers I guess). They don't know what's wrong with it yet and will resume trouble shooting when the gauge get's in. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif I figure if I get it back by next Friday, I'll be doing good. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif
chuntag95 09-25-2003, 04:25 PM I turned over the calling duties to the wife. She is MUCH meaner than I am. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif They got the line pressure gauge in last night and it checked good. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Shocked.gif I don't know if they dropped the pan to see if there was clutch material, but I will find out. They now say it's the solenoid and they have to get one in. Let's see, Dmaxalli Tech said that on the 11th or TWO WEEKS AGO! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif I could have driven up to him and had him fix it faster.
Eric, how long does it take to get a solenoid? I hope it's not another two weeks. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wacko.gif The S-10 I have had developed a new trick to go with the squeeling bearing. The seat adjuster lets loose and you go all the way back to the stops. I can't reach the pedals and the seat belt catches and won't let me get back up. Luckily, the two times it did it, I was going slow and had time to unbuckle and hit the brakes or http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Dead.gif. I'll tell you anything you want to know, just stop the torture! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Unhappy.gif
dmaxalliTech 09-25-2003, 10:01 PM Chris, not sure to laugh or not!
Eric
chuntag95 09-25-2003, 10:06 PM Well, you can http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif or http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif. I'll try to keep my half full attitude and know that they FINALLY got to the right answer. It's better to be slow and get there, then fast and take a wrong turn. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
dmaxalliTech 09-25-2003, 10:08 PM thats right Chris, keep smiling!
chuntag95 09-26-2003, 05:51 PM Well, looks like more time in the S-10. Maybe I'll get some stilts. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif They are saying Monday or Tuesday now. I can tell they are trying to get it right the first time, so I'll chill. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif I guess this is the part where they get experience. So, why is the fluid orange? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif
Looks like I need to take another trip to the Allison dealer for fluid since my Transynd went down the drain. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Broken Heart.gif
chuntag95 09-29-2003, 08:22 PM Well, the new valve body is supposed to be here tomorrow. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif I hope I get my truck back by Wednesday. I bought 4 new 265 Michelins on Saturday for it. That stung the wallet. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Pinch.gif

</A>I got my truck back tonight. Ahhhhhhh. They ended up replacing the valve body and sending my old one back to Allison for failure analysis. Time will tell, but I hope that is the last of the no go nonsense. All of my pressures and stuff looked good, so all the other stuff got a clean bill of health. The only bad part was $128 of Transynd down the drainhttp://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4_2_5.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001) ..... literally. Oh well, that gives me something to do later. Tomorrow I get 4 new strip makers http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif and pay the queens tax to stay on the road another year.
Thanks to Eric and all of the rest who helped me through this ordeal.
Chris

dmaxalliTech 09-30-2003, 11:30 PM Chris, I didnt think about it but you should of had them suppy the oil for all the trouble you have been through. Oh well. I will find out more on your valve body hopefully once it makes it back to Allison.
chuntag95 09-30-2003, 11:41 PM They left PLENTY of oil in my truck. I had to clean it when I got home. It looks like they spilled oil in the drivers floor board catch all. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif I wiped up the grease off the dash, consol and door. I think I will call them back tomorrow and complain about the interior condition. I have a hole in the vinyl on the drivers door. I don't know if I did it or they did, but I think I would have remembered it if I did. I'll just have to see. I was so happy to be back in my truck and not be in the death trap S-10, I let it slide when I probably shouldn't have. Also, the interior smells strongly like fuel.
dmaxalliTech 09-30-2003, 11:48 PM <DIV>Chris, You should have left the oil/grease,, there is no excuse for returning your truck in that condition. I would politly express my unhappiness and ask them to have the interior detailed.. That is just not good business on there end. I would mention the door also... That just.....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif hearing that stuff.</DIV>
chuntag95 10-01-2003, 12:01 AM They also left me on low fuel when they got it almost full. I figure over 250 miles. I wonder is someone didn't take it home one night or something. The radio was set on AM and the power outlet panel was up. I don't use either since I wire everything direct and have XM. I figure a cell phone since there was grease on the cover. Okay, now I'm getting mad. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif

FirstDiesel 10-01-2003, 08:10 AM KI love dealers with quality service departments!! Mine spends more time worrying about getting good grades on their GM< survey than earning the good grades. When I had the rear end seal replaced they gave me the truck back with all the grease still inside the wheels!
Mackin 10-01-2003, 09:19 AM All they replaced is the valvebody ?? How many miles were on the truck ?? You have to think this,a valvebody , really isn't a wear out part .... Hate to pee on your parade of good fortune and hope it's fixed correctly, but take a look at your service order for me,would ye ......

chuntag95 10-01-2003, 01:00 PM Mac,
I called the service advisor and complained about the grease and door panel. They are ordering a new door panel and going to detail the inside when I bring it in to get it changed out.
I think it is fixed correctly since these guys weren't the ones deciding what to do.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif Allison's field service "guru" got involved and was calling the shots. Basically, the tech was doing what Allison told him. They wanted the valve body to understand the code I threw. It is rare from what I gather and not 100% understood. If it helps them improve for the future and fix others faster, I'm willing to play along. From what I gather, Allison did not believe the solenoid would fix it and the problem was a vavle sticking. The problem was which vavle in the body? They are going to do a failure analysis on it to determine the actual problem. I would like to know how it turns out, but I doubt that will happen.
