Hooked up my battery for teh first tim ethis year on my 5er and the breakaway switch melted. I will replace just worried that I may have some problems with the brakes. Did a stupid thing and pulled the plug on the breakaway switch last summer so I am guessing that current would have been going to the breaks all summer. Never thoughout about it when I stowed the 7 pin Conector which has the breakaway switch tied to it.
I know not very smart!!!!

Doubt the battery(ies) lasted all summer and maybe not the magnets. Dexter Axles has some Good trouble shooting information on electric brakes. I would also check the wiring in the brakes/switch loop.
Until the trailer side is verified, I would not hook to the truck, (protect the controler).
That's realy Bum Luck.-:t Hope your repairs are minimal.

Are you talking about the cable that acutuates the breakaway switch being tied to the 7 way connector? If so that is not where it should be fastened. It should be to the frame or hitch in a place that won't come loose. If you are referring to the electrical wiring being tied to the 7 way that is also wrong. The breakaway is suppose to be in the brake circuit with power thru the switch to the brakes. This circuit should be totally independent of vehicle power or it cannot function as intended.
This circuit activates if the trailer comes loose from the truck and that is all it is intended to do. Anything else is asking for problems.

To keep the cable going to the pin in the breakaway switch from slapping around it has been zipped tied to the cable that goes to the 7 pin connector with the end of the cable attached to either the 5th wheel frame or to one of the safety chain loops on the ball hitch. Should teh unit come off teh hitch the cable would activate the breakaway switch as it should. When the 7 pin connector was stored for the summer while the unit is in a park the pin in the breakaway switch was pulled and stored with the 7 pin conector cable. Lesson learned the next break away switch will for sure not be zipped tied to the 7 pin control cable.
I just hope nothing other than the breakaway switch has been damaged.
