: What should I look at when buying a high mileage 04?
Hey everyone, I'm going to look at a high mileage 2004 today. It has 160k on it, I'm not sure if this is a lot on a Duramax or not. How long do these motors typically last? Also is there anything else I should look out for?
maxdout1 01-06-2010, 11:14 AM LB7 or LLY
BrynBaily 01-06-2010, 02:51 PM I'd second that, looking at an 03' LB7 with 160K from a contractor we work with. He is the original owner and took care of it from what I can see. It does need front end parts (ball joints, int. shaft, idler ect). The passenger door also has no power to it (window and locks) which makes me think it maybe the module:confuzeld
His warranty history is a wiring harness at 35K, fuel filter 82K and instrument cluster at 111K. Nothing about injectors.
I'm thinking of making an offer of 10,000.
If anyone would like to chip in their .02 I'm sure cree and I both would greatly appreciate it.:)
LB7 or LLY
Not sure, how can you tell? By vin code? I don't think the guy knows what he has.
neilltz 01-06-2010, 03:57 PM If its LB7...the vin will show 231 in there. If LLY...232.
I wouldn't call 160K worn out for a Duramax. Injectors...well maybe they are due or close to be replaced. But thats typical it seems on todays electronically controlled multi-shot (pilot injection), high pressure common rail units. The injectors have fired many more times than old nozzle type single event types. And they are more complicated components.
Anyhow...I'd say there is much life left in the basic engine. Reading here will show 300K, 400K and some 500K trucks without major overhaul.
If its shot at 160K...it'd be no better than any gas motor.
KEVINL 01-06-2010, 04:23 PM 175k on mine still runs great
It had injectors at 165k and headgaskets but the headgaskets were my fault not the motors
we have a 01 dually at work its at 200k on injectors were replaced twice runs great
160k is nothing for a duramax
Brad92 01-06-2010, 04:37 PM The 8th digit in the vin is a 1 if LB7, or 2 if LLY.
lotsofmiles 01-06-2010, 04:38 PM since when is 160 high?

diesel addict 01-09-2010, 07:33 PM i rebuilt my 01 at 350 000 and crosshatch is still in the cylinders... i rebuilt it for preventive maintence in the future.... its barely even broke in yet at 160 lol
pjordan0111 01-09-2010, 07:39 PM i got 203k on an 02 LB7
Thanks for the replys guys. I am coming over from a Cummins and 160k isn't a scratch in the longevity on one of them. Just wasn't to sure how long Duramax's lasted.

Not to hijack the thread but lotsofmiles how much would you say you spent money wise on diesel in the lifespan of the LBZ in your sig if you wouldn't mind sharing. I'm just curious cause I know you've probably burnt quite a few tanks lol:D.
lotsofmiles 01-09-2010, 08:06 PM I've got it all recorded in a notepad in the truck. But its not accurate, sometimes I'd fill the van from the trucks aux tank, and the shop heater usually gets filled from the truck aux tank too. Sometime I'll have to total it up.
edit - I do remember when diesel was high having some fillups that were over $500!

Dang and I though $100 was alot for a fill up lol. Thanks for the info Lotsofmiles. Back to the thread get a carfax report if your really looking to get a dmax. I got my 2002 dmax with 193,000 and it runs great it has 195,000 on it now and still not a problem. It had the injectors replace beforeI got it and I forgot to ask when they were replaced but If i have to replace them I going big time twin cp3's and 40% over's. Another thing is make sure the you get the maintence records if you can and make sure that it has been taking care of. Also make sure it wasn't a new orleans flood vehicle check the interior for signs of water damage and a nother thing is make sure the fuel filter has been change regulary so you'll know that clean fuel has flowed through the injectors since water seems to be a big killer of injectors from what I've read on here.
edit- sorry for the long post just trying to help with ideas on what to check to make sure you get a good truck.
