I have a 85 C70http://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif (http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=348148#) with the 366 tall deck motor in it.. and I feel like it would be a bit more useful if I dropped the extra 6.5 TD I have into it.

From what I've read, the bell housings / bolt patterns of the block are the same, and should bolt right up. The C70 uses a motor (http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=348148#) mount across the front of the block, so that shouldn't be a problem. Just would like any more input and ideas before I start the transplant.

TIA

I thought of doing something similar, but I don't know if the 6.5 would hold up under the strain placed on it from running it under a heavy load. How much torque does the 366 have compared to a 6.5?

BBW, those 366 are like a tank. They don't make a pile of power, but good luck ever wrecking one. We have a 366 in an 80 C 70 grain truck 5+2. I have thought about the same thing, but if I was going to swap in a diesel, I would swap in something much tougher than the 6.5.

Just my $.02

we are doing a 6.2-6.5 swap into a c-5000 dumptruck, you will need to do something different with the front mount, as the diesel block is not drilled for front mount.

we are looking at making a set of mounts that bolt to the sides and extend to the front mount. also we did a larger turbo setup to install a larger turbo to make more power, you should also do your top end with new head gaskets and head studs for more reliability, also invest in a dsg stud girdle to strengthen the bottom end.

if your motor is a drive-by-wire i reccomend using a mechanical ip so you dont need to install the computer. you should be okay with this motor as long as you install a nice big rad, and your oil cooler, sure this setup is not a power house like a cummins, but it is less than half the price to swap, as well as your savings in gas as well:D

we are posted in the 6.2 threads, look for custom turbo setups:cool:

Thanks for the input. I got a good low mileage 6.5 for wicked cheap, so why not use it. The 366 runs and drives, but over time with more use, I can't help but think the 6.5 would work better.

I was looking at the same regarding the front motor mount. Coming off the side shouldn't be difficult. I have one with a mechanical IP so that will be easier. I have two huge radiators ready. Good input on the oil cooler. Might have to look at the stud girdle and doing head gaskets. Thanks again.

those 366 engines will twist off anything that gets in their way they have tourqe for miles! strangest motor ever though, all stroke and no bore almost. the truck will take alot longer to get rolling and it will take alot of shifting to keep it moving but it should get half decent milage over the 366. my 366 in a 6500 GMC graintruck gets around 5 MPG average running loaded/empty back and forth from the combine. so im sure a 6.5 will blow that idea out of the water but thats the only thing it will do im sure.

One word, Cummins :D. 6.5 in a MD truck isn't something I'd recomend but maybe it'd work.

Well we got our 6.5L into the C-5000, Project Pugg...... has a lot more power than the 366. Still haven't towed trailer and machine with it yet, but this is coming.

The tranny misses a gear or two, thinking either higher gears in rear end or an overdrive unit.....

We are just finishing our run up, will have more stats to come, such as fuel mileage, rpm/boost pressures, EGT's, and water/meth consumption....

If you are still thinking about the swap, it is totally do-able....

if you are seeing this, leave feed-back on the project pugg thread in 6.2l.....:)
