: 1987 duramax won't start

I put a 01 duramax in a 1987 crewcab 1 ton for sled pulling and am tring to wrap things up on it. Today I tried starting it for the first time since I took it out of the doner truck and was left scratching my head. I have the ecm and tcm plugged in and the entire harness from the doner truck inside my cab and I used the 01 dash cluster as well. The truck will crank and crank but won't start it ran fine before we pulled the motor but I don't know were to go now. The doner truck was an auto and the P indicator for park doesn't light up but all the rest of the gears do on the display. I am using a nv4500 in the 87 with a dual disc and just have the computers plugged in and was planning on eliminating wires once the truck was running. I even pulled the alli next to the truck and plugged in all of the connectors and still just cranks and cranks:help: I am going to try a new fuel filter and was wondering if maybe I need the computer under the driver's seat as well. Sorry for the long post but I wanted to give as much info as needed for some much needed answers. I don't have much time during the week to work on the truck so I probably won't get to do any investigating till then thanks and put on your thinking caps. As for me its time to drink away my problems.:D

Not being the mechanic that others are here and the fact that this isn't the typical truck the motors are in, I'd start with the simplest of things. If it's cranking then all it should need now is fuel. Make sure all the air is out of the system and maybe double check the connections to make sure there tight.

I have done a few fuel injection swaps into older vehicles and I am familiar with the ECM PCM and BCM quirks to make these systems function. Right off, I would say that you are not receiving a signal from your "drive by wire" throttle pedal. Are you using one and is it connected from a donor vehicle. I assume your fuel pressure test also is showing pressures with OEM specs. Check on these two first. Just my two bits.

I checked to make sure it was getting fuel and even put a inline pump on it and it was getting fuel but it seemed that after we cranked on it for a while I would open the bleed screw and noticed that the fuel sure wasen't pouring out like it does on my 02 thats why I'm thinking maybe a fuel filter. I am using the entire tps and fuel pedal with all wiring from the donor truck because I didn't want to cut any wires (yet) and create more problems. By the way hear are some pics of some of my progress and thanks for the input. http://photos.yahoo.com/ph//my_photos

If you did not swap all the computers, ECM TCM ABS BCM and others it will not start. The security system would be telling the engine not to run as it could not find all the componets. Good news is it can be fixed with compter programming.

Diesel Tech I was planning on getting a tts extreme for the truck once it was running anyway, but if you think that you could make the truck run off of the ecm only then I would be willing to wait to start the truck until I got the custom ecm from you. I am just getting anxious to fire it up since it has been such a long drawn out project. I appreciate any thoughts you and others might have.

I work for ryder and brought home their laptop to see if it would tell me anything and it seemed to read my ecm real slow and when it was done it had a few codes but it didn't say what they all were and the ones it did tell what the were didn't sound like anything that wouldn't let the truck start. I don't think it is the greatest software but it is new to us it is, the program I used was eaton-md light duty. The codes I wrote down were H U3FD4, H P0101, P P0540, H P0540, H P0540. I have all my computers hooked up and even have the steering wheel out of the donor truck sitting on my floorboard plugged in. Does the fuel sending unit have to be plugged in to run? I'm all out of ideas. If anyone could tell me what these codes are and maybe shed some light on my situation I would appreciate it.

Could ya drop one in my 67 k30 4x4.I've been thinking Cummins but this would be way better and cooler.

I think this is my last engine swap for a while):h , but it really isn't as bad as you would think as long as you have the time and a good place to do it. I would definatly suggest buying a complete donor truck from a junk yard though for all the wiring needed. That way you have motor mounts to modify, exhaust to work with, and it will have all the gauges if you go that route as well. I would have prefered a 67' style truck myself but they are waaay to hard to find. If you do decide to do something like this let me know if you have any questions as I've learned just how compadable gm has been over the years being as mine is a 87,98,01 and a few others chevy 1-ton, and think of it this way its GM all the way.:ro)

I think it had a bad cam sensor and that was the problem. I don't know why it didn't show a code every time I scanned it though, but the last time I used a matco scan tool and it had the cam sensor code. Well I'm getting the tts extreme for it and went ahead and sent it off to get programed where it will be able to run with just the ecm alone without needing signals from any other sources. So for now I will start building my weight bracket, traction bars, and driveshaft loops. I have plenty to do still but I think I can see the light t the end of the tunnel.

Thanks for the interest.

If you have more pics you should make a big thread or website about it when you are done.. Lots of people wanting to do that sort of thing but unsure where to start. Besides custom stuff like that is cool..

Yes I am interested also. Since you are located in KY I would like to see the setup.

I'm glad to hear there is some interest in the project. I posted alot of different pics in a new thread of a few things My dad and my brother and I have brought back to life over the past few years. I was going to have just the 87 on there but figured it would be eiser for me to look at all of them if they were all together. The ones of the 87 aren't the mor recent ones, but I haven't had time to put any more on there. Coalbucket1 if you want to see the truck you should stop by some time, I just don't know how far away in Kentucky you live. I'm in northern Ky. off of the Florence Burlington exit off of 75. Pm me if you want and I could give better directions.
