I just purchased a 7.3 liter f 350 dually 4x4 with 116000 miles. How many miles are the automatice transmissions on this truck getting before needing some work? Should I immediately have it serviced/adjusted/inspected or just wait for something to come up? Any other specific things I should check having just purchased? Thanks for any help

What year is it? Do you have any maint records from the previous owner? make sure at least all your fluid levels are full.

Its a 2002. There are no maintence records, and there is no owners manual...but I'll be hopefully getting a manual soon. Besides checking all fluids, is there anything else I should check or do before putting some towing miles on it. Thanks again

2001 was the year with the dreaded mechanical diode problem. With the 02 you have powder coated rods but an ok tranny.
My 99 ate the tranny at 83K miles due to being chipped and driven very hard and towed too heavy. Now 110K miles later the Ford rebuilt tranny seems to be holding up well, no more chip!

My 99 F-350 4X4 cooked my tranny at 88K. Completely stock.Never towed anything, although I do have a bucket truck. Problem I was told was cooling lines for trans to small.
Installed trans cooler and inspect trans fluid at every fluid change and new trans is still in good shape with 70K on it.

Immediately add another tranny cooler, in tandum, to the stock tranny cooler. It will cost about $100 bucks and installation about $50. Then drop the tranny pan and change out the filter, drain the TC and then fill with a good synthetic tranny fluid. While the pan is off, do the Transgo baby kit that just increases the fluid flow and a couple of springs. You should be set for a while. Change the fluid every 25-30k religously.

Added a cooler to mine too as well as a tranny temp gauge. A tranny is a big investment to neglect.
Almost at 30K miles again on the truck time to get the tranny fluid changed again. The truck tows pretty big loads from time to time.

My 99 E350 7.3 liter pulls a 36' trailer at least 4000 miles every summer - no problems, but I do have an extra heavy duty cooler, temp guage, and regular fluid changes. For the price of changing tranny oil every 30K, its cheap insurance. Make sure your cooling system is well maintained too, the auxilliary cooler still pumps oil thru the stock radiator cooler.
By the way, I'm at 265,000 miles (475,000 km) with no major components gone. Water pump, alternator, starter have all been changed, and 5 (!!) vacuum pumps, but the motor is still very strong, original turbo and fuel system, and passes emissions tests every year with flying colors.
