I'm sure there's already a thread about this. Hopefully a moderator can get me there or someone knows the scoop.
I have an 86 chevy dually CUCV with a 6.2L non-turbo, turbo 400 tranny, NP 208 transfer case and a dana 70 rear axle geared at either 4.56 or 4.88 to 1. I bought it to tow a 12000-15000 trailer with. My questions is how hard is it to change out the 6.2L with a modern diesel engine? Mine has absolutely no computers, so I know that's an issue. Also, I'd like to keep the turbo 400 and put an overdrive on it- will any of the modern engines mount up to it? Thanks ahead.

Hey Bud, thats a nice looking truck. I have never seen a duel rear wheel miltary truck! I also am thinking about doing the same thing with my 82 1 ton. Search for De Stroked, they have all the adapters to go to a 400 trans, motor mounts etc. There is no actual kit for it, you just kind have to make your own. A 12 valve cummins would be awesome in there. Very little wiring and no computers. This is what i have been told, i havent done the swap, the truck is still in service kicking ass daily.

best bet would be to find "frito lay" cargo van they had 4 or 6 bt with gm transmission(some did have 6.5's) and you would just have to transplant, modify motor mount. you can look on dovebid to try and find some being auctioned. pick up whole van and scrap body, make back some $$.

Using the Cummins/GM adapter found it the bread/potato vans is not ideal in a 4x4 application due to the 8* tilt. I would go with a second gen Cummins in that truck. I make motor mounts for that swap. Let me know if you have any questions.

I checked out your WEB site yesterday after I got the last post. I've got a note to get in touch with you when I do the swap. There's nothing wrong with the 6.2 that's in there now plus I'm on my way to Afghanistan in 2 months so it'll be a while before I get around to it. Right now I'm piecing together a game plan for it. I'm glad to know there's resources out there.
