There was a thread that asked recently if military 6.5L's were stalling on our troops. It appears it is happening.

thats interesting, sounds like the cause though. that defently wasnt a problem when they were just begining to get used.

I dont ever remember a problem using them, especially that one. Only when someone decided to pour water instead of diesel into the tank and try to run it.

A few times the engine would want to overheat. But that is due to the poor radiator/grill setup. Bad design+constantine(barbed) wire+other roadblocking equip on top of the opening= less airflow.

A fix to a unrelated problem(s), how about un-armoring the hmmvw's?

I believe the thread your referring to was asking if the Military HMMWV's had Electronic pumps with PMDs causing a stalling problem.

The answer is no, they are all mechanical pumps, which are somewhat prone to Hard Start Hot problems caused by head&rotor wear.

My nephew in the Army, working as a truck mechanic, has replaced many IP's over the last 2 years, and was in Afganistan for the winter. He hasn't seen one electronic pump yet, even on the turbo engines. Most of the failures seem to point to worn pumps as TDG stated, and most likely caused by the lack of lubrication in the fuel (JP-8?).

Stanadyne had a bad run of mecanical injection pumps that would fail after a period of time and would not hot start. The combination of thin fuel (JP-8), hot temperatures, and defective head and rotors has contributed to the problem.
Wear is probably not part of the problem.

Usually, you can inspect the rotor and determine if its worn, and it doesn't take much to cause hard start hot, but I find with the 6.5 mechanical pumps that the rotors may look flawless and still not pass cranking on the test bench.

This is mostly with the old style head&rotors, late style had much less problems.

You should also figure in the fact that they sit for hours idling and that also adds to the problem some I'd bet.

A real military version? Like an M998? Totally different animal than a civilian H1.
