: Diesel Fuel in '07

I am thinking of ordering an '06 Duramax. From my reading of the forum the Feds are changing diesel fuel regulations in '07 for cleaner emissions so GM will have to change the engines to take the new fuel. My question is, will the old diesel engines be able to run with the new fuel additives or will they have to be modified in some way?

As far as I know the change is to low sulphur fuels, which is good for all diesels. It is so much easier to meet emissions with low sulphur diesel, I don't know how they will be able to get there without it.

The change in fuel won't make a difference to your truck, it will burn cleaner which is a good thing, but the price of diesel will surely rise due to the extra expense to make it (more refining)

also the LLY is already made for the 07 emissions.. thus the egr, cat, etc, etc.. the duramax is just ahead.

Since I started driving fuels of all types have been reformulated God only knows how many times. Nothing to sweat, whatever comes down the line won't effect anything enough or cause sudden death to anything on the road. Cost will probably rise some but so will everything else. Best fuel ever was lead ethyl, might find some reference to it in an old history book.

TxChristopher is correct the EPA is mandating that diesel fuel will take a cut in sulfuer content by 90+% most over the road diesel is in the 350 ppm sulfur range and as of jan1 07' sulfur content will be controlled to 15ppm.

I've heard reports that only a nickel a gallon increase for the cleaner fuel. Again I have no proof or validation of that, but as far as sulfur content that is correct. We already use it at work in our test labs.

There is a display at work of five jars with different diesel grades over the past 35 years, and they vary in color from motor oil grade to urine colored fuels. The o7 fuel is starting to look like gasoline.

They curently make a low sulfer diesel fuel, for 07' it'll be an ultra low sulfer blend.

Also, keep in mind that sulfer provides lubrication qualities for the diesel fuel injection system that is similiar to what happen with gasoline; lead provided lubrication for the exhaust valves. Hopefully, the LLY injection system has accounted for less "lubricity" in the reformulated diesel fuel.

I don't know for sure, but I am guessing they will/have added lubricants to the fuel to help with that Summitmaxlly. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

this is a discussion I had with my diesel mechanic at the dealer 7 months ago.. he told me that the fuel was going to change and remove the librication.. he said GM was going to push the use of additives like Stanadyne and the other GM approved one. He also told me that if you have run the current diesel in your LLY for x amount of gallons then your injectors are going to be fine, but its always good to use an additive.

So those of you that may know this.. with the decrease in lubrication and cleaner fuel will we see better mileage you think??

I thought the new fuel intro will be Jan 06...not Jan 07.

Currently ARCO and VALERO in Southern California have been brewing the new 15ppm sulfur fuel since sometime in 04. What you get at the pump is unknown but my cardlock guy has been selling nothing but the new fuel since mid 04.

This topic was talked about before but to summarize...the additives they are currently adding the the new fuel is contaminating the pipes that also carry jet fuel.

They are adding the additives somewhere down stream...does not make me feel good about how good that is.

The number requested by Bosch for these fuel systems for lubricity was higher(more lubricity) than what is currently planned for the new fuel.

Answer: YOu better add something for lubricity...Whether it be with an additive..Primrose/STandyne...or B20.
