: The perfect tire size for stock wheels?
SMiller 12-28-2009, 08:26 PM Well we all know 285's are way to wide for the stock wheels, although we all do it anyways, has anyone ever tried some 255/85/16's instead? I seen another truck on a web-site that had some Cooper discover s/t 255/85/16 on it and it looked great, they are not super wide like 285's but are a little taller, might just be the perfect tire for the stock wheel, pretty tall to at 33.21in.
LA DMAX 12-28-2009, 09:13 PM The 255/85 16's are an approved size for the PYO's, but they are getting harder to find and seem like a dying breed, so if you want a set, hurry. Agreed, they do look a lot better than the pizza cutter 245's.

6Gears 12-28-2009, 09:43 PM I just bought 12 of the cooper s/t's in 255/85/16 for both our duallys. They are mounted up on my dads 01 f-350 with a leveling kit and look GREAT! I have the other set mounted up on some alcoa wheels for our 86 6.2L dually, if I ever get it put back together! I think they look a little skinny on a SRW truck, but they look like they belong on a dually. Overall, they are wearing great and are pretty quiet going down the road.
gunnut 12-29-2009, 09:34 AM I have the BFG 255/85/16 MT KM2 on mine and i love them, they are just about to turn 5k. They show mimimal wear, ride great, great on wet roads and plow with no issues.I know people have complained about wet road issues but i have had no problem as of yet.I Had 285 last time and they were good but the handleing is much better with a tire that fits the wheel properly.
Blk04HD 12-29-2009, 11:32 AM I had a set on my 02 GMC that was a 8100 / 6 speed truck and only ran them for about 2 weeks. They were showing wear at about 500 hundred miles, serious wear, like a 1/3 of the tread on the rear wear, and no i did'nt spin them either. They were a new design tire and i don't think the tread compound was correct. I took off a set of 285 BFG all terrains when i had these put on because i wasnted a norrower tire for the stock PYO wheel, with the same height. My tire guy looked at them and agreed they were wearing way too much for the mileage and asked me what i wanted to do and i had him order another set of BFG 285 a/t's and replaced the 255/85s and solved the problem instantly. I thought the tires drove real squirrely also like there was too much sidewall for the tread width. Good luck with them, maybe your set will be better than the set i had.
dddonkey 12-30-2009, 08:04 PM I have H2s with 285s on the truck and a 255 on the stock 16 for the spare. Works out great.
Cougar GT-E 01-01-2010, 11:01 AM Toyo M55 in 255/85-16. Been on the truck for a couple years are they are doing well.

dozerboy 01-01-2010, 01:05 PM I'm very happy with my 255/85 BFG MT KMs. 255s ain't a dieing breed I see them on a lot of duallies down here. Toyo just started make that size in MTs this last year and Cooper has started making the S/Ts in that size again.
LA DMAX 01-01-2010, 01:12 PM I guess they've been revived, for a while, it was getting hard to find them except for BFG. They are a nice set.

Euqnis 01-07-2010, 09:59 PM What about a 265? Stock is 245 right? Iv heard that 285 is a little overboard... what about a 265? Would that be a better option for stock wheels than 285?
Also, 265/285... can I put that on stock wheels w/o a leveling kit?
LA DMAX 01-07-2010, 11:25 PM Euqnis, you can run the 265's w/o a leveling kit, but with 285's you'll need to do some trimming and massaging your black fenderliner so they clear, and then if you think of getting some mud terrains or even all terrains, they still may rub. 285's on the stock pyo's are just a bit too big to wear correctly unless you get the psi correct. If you want a tall narrower tire, go with the 255/85, if you want a wider shorter tire go with the 265/75. It comes down to preference. I ended up getting a set of Dodge 17X8's and putting 265/70 17's so I wouldn't need to level at this time and so I could keep the stockies around just in case.

SMiller 01-07-2010, 11:27 PM 265's are absolutely perfect! I asked about 255's because a lot of us want taller tires, these trucks should have come with 265's from the factory instead of the little crappy 245's.
LA DMAX 01-07-2010, 11:29 PM Agreed, 265's would have been the perfect all around size.

What areas will rub with a 265/85? I would love a taller tire, but I want wider too, rofl. (Assuming thats even a real size, never checked)
Im looking for basically the widest/tallest tire I can fit... been thinking about a leveling kit but not sure about that over a actual suspension lift (I want the suspension, so ill be savin for a bit most likely)
Been trying to decide between the BFG AT/MT. Thinking ill be going the AT route this time, I do alot more on road than off... really just looking for good snow/ice performance. Everyone and their dog calls me when they get stuck now :P Ill be buying chains for that though, so its not really a issue I suppose.
Euqnis 01-08-2010, 12:13 AM Lol, nevermind. Checked, not a real size, sorry for the laziness :P
SMiller 01-08-2010, 12:28 AM check out tirerack.com for ALL tire size and info, tons of specs and EXACT sizes!
I didn't say to buy there, but a good place to look.
LA DMAX 01-08-2010, 02:22 AM Euqnis, there are guys on here that have put the 285's with just cranking the torsion bar up 1-2 inches and doing some trimming/massaging, but unless you want a pogo stick ride, I wouldn't crank more than 1 inch. If you plan on getting a suspension lift of say 4-6 inches, than the 265's may look a bit small.
You got a tough decision, but remember that a 265 will fit no problem, even an MT. You may want to do a search and see if anyone has a set up you are looking for. Pics can answer a lot of questions.

botman 01-08-2010, 10:17 AM When I bought my 2008 Crew Cab in Nov 08, I had just put BFG KM2 285/75/16 on my Ford 7.3. I mean they were only two weeks old. So the deal in buying the new Druamax was that they would install the KM2's from the Ford to the Duramax. Long story short, the drivers side front rubber the wheel well on right turns, and the dealer this would void the drive train warranty.
BOW HUNTER 01-08-2010, 12:41 PM Do you need to have spacers on the back of a dually to run 255/85's? My buddy wants to get a taller tire but doesn't want to have to modify too much.
LA DMAX 01-08-2010, 10:19 PM BOW HUNTER, read this link, sounds like they're gonna touch with stock wheels. I think if you get aftermarket wheels or spacers you might be able to fit them, but I'm not too familiar with the dually.

SMiller 01-09-2010, 11:44 PM Yes on spacers, my buddys '06 3500 dually made it around the block before going back and getting 235's put back on it, the 255's looked good though!
