: No more PSD, 05 Dmax!

I finally got the truck I had been wanting for a while now. A few more options than I wanted but it was all the dealer had. I traded my 2001 F350 PSD for a 2005 2500 Duramax LT, sb, 4x4, auto, white, grey/black interior. I am very happy with this truck, rides like a caddy compared to my other truck. I have nothing bad to say about the PSD but I have always wanted a Dmax and was born into chevys. This truck stock feels as fast as my 7.3 with the evolution programmer on 100hp. I have a few questions I will do a search and try to find the answers but I will post them here also.

Is there a wait to start or glow plug light??

My idle oil pressure is around 35 lbs, is that about right?

How big of tires can I fit stock or with adjustment to torsion bars??

What mileage should I do the first oil change? I will be using Mobil 1 truck/suv.

Are there any oversized filters to get or just keep stock size?

I see next to the air box there is a foil looking cover over the fender air hole. Remove it?

What is the most common exhaust system, turbo back or cat back?

This is about it so far. Not ready for a programmer yet. Would like to do gauges in the future.

Thanks
Dave :D

Yea, it took me a month before I realized it was working. Got to watch real close, it cycles in about 3 to 4 seconds.
Oil pressure is around 35 psi at idle. Mine runs about 60 at speed.
Cant/wont answer the other questions. personally, I dont care about all that crap. I bought it for a tow vehicle and dont feel it is necessary

1. You need a new screen name!):h
2. Yes, there is a wait to start/glow plug light.
3. Sounds about right with fresh oil, will drop some after use and break in.
4. 285's seams to be about it but some have done more.
5. Did mine at 500.
6. Use stock and look into secondary fuel filter. Many options but I'll be supporting our founder when the funds come up. He has one that many like.
7. I did but some have warned of water entering when really wet outside. Will destroy the factory filter. Leave the factory filter!
8. How about, Downpipe back (kitty goes by-by!). My preference was Banks.
9. Gauges are second smartest thing to do!
10. First was becoming a member here!:ro)

Your on the right track. Plan on spending a day searching and reading. You'll find many opinions here and some facts (Air filter, thank you Spicer!).

And most important, Welcome to the Dmax club!:ro)

Pig tail looking light in upper left side of instrument pannel. The truck has a fast glow plug system and depending on the temperature you may or may not see the light. If you do it should not stay on for more than about 3sec.

My idle oil pressure is around 35 lbs, is that about right?
Sounds about right on a warmed up engine.

How big of tires can I fit stock or with adjustment to torsion bars??
I beleive 285's will fit with the T-Bars cranked up. Maybe bigger will fit.

What mileage should I do the first oil change? I will be using Mobil 1 truck/suv.I'd say 500miles. Just my personal preference.

Are there any oversized filters to get or just keep stock size?
Not sure what you are talking about here. There are secondary filter systems for fuel and oil available. GM only put one fuel filter on this beast. It is a double pleated filter but you may want to look at a secondary fuel filter system. I beleive the cleaner the fuel the better.

I see next to the air box there is a foil looking cover over the fender air hole. Remove it?
I think this is to keep water out of the air box when going through puddles or when tires spash water up into the fender well during rainy day driving.

What is the most common exhaust system, turbo back or cat back?
Both depending if you want to play with emissions or not. Getting rid of the Kitty and EGR are somewhat popular mods. I don't beleive in putting all that soot back into the motor. Putting a less restrictive exhaust system can reduce your EGT's.

This is about it so far. Not ready for a programmer yet. Would like to do gauges in the future.

Search the site on this subject. You'll find a lot of information.

Thanks

Welcome to the site. Enjoy the new ride. This is a very friendly site and a lot of information is available. Do a search if you have a question about something and if you can't find an answer post and someone will respond most likely.

285/75's will fit with very slight lift (I think I did 1 1/2 turns) from the bars, and maybe a few good palm strikes to the inner fender where they rub when backing up and turning, you will see what I mean. Mine haven't rubbed in 15,000 miles since. :ro)

Any bigger tire (other than 305/70's) means cutting the lower trailing edge of the plastic below the bumper and really cranking the bars which gives a harsh ride and little if any down travel.:(

IMO 4x4's should come with 285's from the factory, they look right on the truck, although they do somewhat soften up the performance slightly.

I think Dave05Dmax or DmaxDave is a better screen name now for you.:grd:

The other guys totally nailed the other things you asked, so thats my .02 just for you.:)

Good choice coming over from the dark side!

I 2nd all the things said above. If your interested in the topic of fuel filters, check out nicktane filters. As stated above If you get an exhaust system that removes the cat you will need a fingerstick (which are sold by a member on this site, his username is "fingers") And an egr blocker plate (I know john sells them, his username is john@dps). You may allready know all this, but i fugured i would mention it all anyway just in case. good luck. ):h

Thanks for all of the ideas, tips, and comments. I was able to put a few more miles on my truck today and im loving it even more.

I put Banks 4" monster catback on it lastnight. It came off my friends 04 dmax. Doesnt sound much different than stock and didnt notice any power increase. I was going to put on his K&N FIPK also but it was for LB7 and wouldnt fit. I checked out the cat-less front pipe from MBRP and I will most likely get one. I am just a little gun shy about hacking into the wiring on a brand new truck to do the Finger stick deal. I am mostly worried about cutting into it and having warranty issues. I can just see them saying a modified EGR blew up the motor or something stupid like that. Anyway, I have been doing a lot of searching and getting answers to my questions. This is a nice site.

Also, I am from Marysville California. Near Sacramento. "1tonoffun"
