i NEVER tow...but the other day a relative asked me to tow a 6x12x2 dump trailer full of damp reject sand for him, so i did.

the trailer by itself weighed 6000 pounds plus who knows how much weight the sand added. it was topped off and then some. needless to say that sucker was heavy. i used a pintle hitch. made my truck squat and sure did make the duramax purr to get it moving. maybe it was my inexperience towing that bent the receiver. i took it easy but there were some bumps along the way that didnt feel to good. ultimately its time to take it off and put something stronger. i dont tow but i sure didnt like this experience.

i feel dumb but it was a learning experience. i thought these trucks were meant for racing:D

any of you guysmind taking a gueestimate as to how much the trailer weighed....my guess is about 14k

Well wet sand is about 120 pcf and the dimensions you gave come out to 144 ft^3, so about 17,280 lbs for just the sand! So you had a load behind you. The factor reciever is only rated for like 7500 lbs, not to surprised it got bent. At least thats the least thing that happened.

Oh well, lesson learned and nobody got hurt. Now you've got a good excuse to get a properly strong hitch for it for next time.

Yeah, I would guess-timate that you were well over 20K pounds. Not sure where the axles are located on the trailer, but I'm sure you were way up there on the tonque weight, as well.

Don't feel dumb...you were smart enough to inspect the hitch receiver. A lot of people wouldn't have.
