: top kicks are they any good ??
outdoorwoman 12-27-2009, 12:29 PM Was on the gm lot and they had a few top kicks and was wondering if anyone has one ?what the mpg was like there little to no info on them.
just wondering if they be a good buy or no. I do alot of hauling of animals and trucks for the race track, and was also planning on starting a contracting company for reno , so the size seems to work in my favor .But if there really bad truck then ill go to a 1ton
thanks
Tanc Crusher 12-27-2009, 02:23 PM Not heard anything bad. Check the Medium duty section here on the forum. They do get a little less mpg than a pickup truck version with same engine and transmission but may be nearly the same with the trailer load. It would haul more for sure.

01Duramax6spd 12-27-2009, 03:05 PM No problem. As to your origonal question I think they are good rigs. I tow 30,000lbs with my 1ton and have been looking to upgrade myself but finding a 4x4 down here is kinda hard :(.
sorry dint see the med duty till after I posted this :)
thanks
outdoorwoman 12-27-2009, 03:12 PM there 4 diffrent 4x4 crew on the lot near me prices range from 22,000 to 48,000 Canadian
so Thought for the price range it was better then getting a 1 ton
i know the motor is the same and the trannys an wee bit diffrent worked on them before in the shop but never owned one so just curious how they hold up to daily driving, wear and tear ext ( all the ones ive seen are off road service truck and take a major beating so cant compare with those ones .Love the look of them but not to sure if they be any good to use all the time like I will need it for, go back and forth to my stable 2x a day to feed plus iam 2 hrs from the closest big city so it will be seeing a fair amount of miles.
thanks for all the help make it alot easyer when I go into town to look for my new wheels
01Duramax6spd 12-27-2009, 03:24 PM $22K Canadian is less than $19K of my US right?? That's pretty cheap for a crew cab. I wish they weren't north of the border :(.

outdoorwoman 12-27-2009, 03:28 PM yup that be about right I though it was cheap ,but they are used but very lightly
the one id like is an 05 with 110,000, hidden hitch, headache rack flat bed no other mod
still has warranty plus can add some.
sticker price is 22 but think i can get them down on it
you think it be worth it ???
01Duramax6spd 12-27-2009, 03:36 PM These are 4x4's I assume? My guess is you don't have 2wd trucks in B.C.
I was just looking at a 05 on Craigslist down here in the states and it's a reg cab with 100K and they want $27K for it and that is about the cheapest I've seen for a 4x4. There was 05 4x4 on Ebay with 220K for $18K but it looked used :(

01Duramax6spd 12-27-2009, 04:58 PM You have issues going between provinces like crossing the border .
That 6500 is very nice but it's 2wd :(. Been eyeing a red one down here like it for $42K US.

Becareful of this truck. I almost bought this truck. Call the guy, negociated a price ($47,000) and was about to fly out and pick it up when the whole deal fell apart. I had ask the guy selling it if it would be a problem to have a local Chevy dealer look the truck over. He said no and I called the local dealer to him. I agreed to pay the bill at the Chevy dealer and simply asked him to take it by the dealership for them to look at. The whole deal fell apart based on this. I have no clue what the issue or problem was but the guy basically refused to call me back after this and he never did take the truck to the dealer for an inspection. That truck has been listed on fleeBay for like 6 months. I don't know if it is a scam or if there is a problem with the truck. I did check it out through my local Chevy dealer (using the VIN) and this guy is the second owner in only 5,000 miles. This truck has the Allison 1000 transmission also (not the 2350).
By the way . . . I ended up buying a BRAND NEW 08 4500, 4x4, CA60, full warrenty and everything for $43kish. That is the chassis only but a custom hauler bed is only another $10k and if you want to go cheap you could get one for $5k. I am SOOOOO glad the deal I had with this guy fell through.
Just FYI > > > I'd be very careful of this guy and this truck.
01Duramax6spd 12-27-2009, 09:00 PM Glad to know. Yeah I've been watching it for a long time on Ebay and now Truck Trader. I don't have the cash right now but I'd sure like a loaded one.
You have any used 4x4's out east??

Just warning you about that Silver eBay truck . . . something fishy going on there . . .
I have a friend who bought a new left over 2005 or 2006 Kodiak 4500. The truck only has 5K miles on it. Never been driven in the winter. It is a 4 x 4, Monroe conversion, black crew cab with stacks, AWESOME, AWESOME, super sharp truck loaded with full GM factory warrenty for another 1 1/2 years. He would sell it for $52,000. I'll see if he has any photos. Honestly I'm not sure he really wants to sell it but he says he does. I'll check. Thst is the only truck I know of in our area.

You didn't say how big of trailers that you tow but I just went from a 3500 to a 5500 and there is a huge difference especially in stability. I tow a 16K lb fifth wheel full time and have helped friends tow some horse trailers that exceeded 25K lbs. You just have to decide for yourself. I know that I'm happy with my decision.. Good luck and be patient. You'll find the right one for you.
outdoorwoman 12-27-2009, 10:04 PM I have 6 horse at the moment so going to buy a new trailer this summer once my house is finished the paper work for being sold ( have a buyer) so iam getting a 24 ft 5th wheel trailer ( i hope lol ) so ya the trailer is going to be on the heavy side . As well have a full sized truck that gos to the track on weekends
But looking at the price diffrent for a 1 ton long box and a topkick with the short wheel base ( to compare sizes ) the top kick come on top other then the pain in the butt to park in small parking lots part :)
bbc03 12-27-2009, 10:28 PM I have 2008 blk 4x4 crew cab 8800 miles w/pick up bed 4sale jeff 703 670 4566 Va.
outdoorwoman 12-27-2009, 10:33 PM man if that wasnt so far id be tempted but to get it up here would cost a mint
nsxnut 12-28-2009, 01:22 PM I have a 6500 Topkick. Mine is a 1998.
I bought it used off of ebay. I have had it for about 4 years now.
My truck has been great. It has a Cat 3216E. It is not the most powerful truck out there but does the job. I have a large toy hauler that I put a car into and go to the race track. My trailer weighs 13k loaded. Truck weighs ~12k with fuel.
In the hills the truck is a little slow but beyond that just fine.
I would buy this truck again.
outdoorwoman 12-28-2009, 04:18 PM Cool nice to hear from other topkick owners I really do like the size and diversity of them.
I saw one older topkick with the cat in it but it sold before I could get any more info on it :( there is Kodiak I really like going to put an offer on it i think?? not to sure yet guess it will depend on what i get from icbc, it seems to be in great shape no dents on the diffs or anything so dont think its ever been off road. Its a really clean unit even right up in the under body.I just dont like the headache rack that it has kind gay looking would want to cahnge out the flat bed for a box are they expensive??
thanks for all the help guys!!
transferred 12-28-2009, 09:12 PM F450 has huge brakes, axles, widetrack front end and a GCWR of 33k. However, the 6.4PSD is not as strong as the rest of the truck. Overall I really like mine (v safe and stable) but am considering moving back to a chassis cab Dmax or Cummins 6.7. Don't have the $$ right now and may tune this and just keep it. Prefer to keep motor stock though as truck pulls every day. Just food for thought....
About Kodiaks/topkicks, strong and nice trucks, only issue is the lower GCWR and fact the Dmax isn't tuned to 365/660 like the other lmm's. They should offer a 4.30 gear version with the full power and a 30-35k GCWR, I'd love one.

tnmtn 12-29-2009, 09:20 AM don't let parking be a concern for the 4500 and up. turning radius has been one of the best points about my 4500. much better than the 3500 i had before.
nsxnut 12-29-2009, 01:06 PM Surprisingly the turning radius of my truck is really good.
I had an F350 previously and Always had to do a multi point turn on a city street where the 6500 can make it in a single radius.
outdoorwoman 12-29-2009, 03:54 PM Iam not a huge ford fan dont mind there older diesels but the new?? one no thank you!!
Iam a chevy fan had a dodge once and HATED it but well see what I can find might have to buy something diffrent :(
MeGMfan 12-30-2009, 07:41 AM OD-W
I thinks these trucks are outstanding as work trucks
I pushed 156k+ miles with no major issues
Turning/stopping and saftey are a huge benifit
The only advise on a purchase point would be, if your looking for a "lady like" ride, you may be disapointed. If that is a concern than go with air ride/air seats/air cab etc
Also, if possible get one under warranty and find a local Med duty dealer for support
good luck:)
