A few days ago I posted my oils analysis numbers and soot was 10 percent. After being questioned about the figure I called the lab later to verify the number and ther tech. said that it was a good number and I had nothing to worry about. Question , what is 10 percent soot part of. Most of the figures I've seen posted are in the tenths, not even a whole number . George M. if you see this I'd appreciate your comment to. Also do I hae anythingnto worry about.Only have about 19k on the truck. Thanks everyone.

Have had two oil analysis done on my Duramax and both showed soot at <0.1 How did your report state the 10 percent?Seems to me that <0.1 is 10 percent of a whole number.

The number shown was 10 and a call to the lab revealed it means 10 percent. Does that mean it is 10 per cent of the oil sample by volume or what. Will call the lab again Monday and find out. Have talked to several people who have oil ana1lysis done on a regular basis and none of them knew what the percemtage figure means. Have a call in to a retired Mobil Oil engineer and as soon as he gets back into town I may find out more.

Big Bend is beautiful from May and June when the all the bushed and cactus are in bloom. We used to camp there in the park when we were younger. Camped there in the winter a couple times, very little snow down low and we would have the whole park to our selves. Have a friend that has family reunions there for chriistmas.

According to literature from Titan Labs. " Fuel soot reported as % weight is the most abrasive of solid suspension in the used oil, it is a result of lugging, overfueling and/or air restriction. It can lead to clogged filters and abrasive wear in cam bearings. Soot that exceeds 1.0 indicates more frequent oil changes." Let's keep in mind that this spec is reported as a % of weight. The 10% spec may be PPM (parts per million) or some other value. If that lab says it is a normal value I'd believe them. I think soot is carbon soot and it is made worse by exhaust gas recirculation. I am in the process of gathering parts to install bypass engine oil filtration on my 6.6l to remove some of this.

My oil anylasis reports it a little different
Mine says : Indication of lugging, over fueling, air inlet restriction, filter plugging, or extended engine idling. Reported in terms of % allowable. (100% is the max normally allowed.)
My last 4 reports were
13
15
19
28 <---- which was probally from colder weather and lugging during plowing season
So I'm pretty good for now
My oxidation is reported the same way % of allowable

My two Blackstone reports came in at .4 & .3. Their comment was: Low soot and insolubles. Indicated good filtering. Later! Frank

Dieseldragon, Which lab do you use?
I use the CAT dealer in Newington H.O. PENN
# is 860-594-4860
The kit's are about $11.00 last I checked.
If you buy a refill kit which is a pak of 10 of them it's a little cheaper
