I have a 2006 3500 srw 6.0L with automatic trans and 261HD transfercase. When I put it in 4 Hi it lights the indicator light in the dash cluster but as soon as I give it any throttle it kicks out and the light goes out. What signals the front axle to engage and disengage? It has the manual shift lever on the floor. If I put it in 4 Lo the transmission stays in 1 gear to 6000 RPM then when it finally shifts the transmission just slips.

Not the expert on this, but it may be the transfer case encoder motor or TCCM possibly. try doing a search and see if your symptoms are similar to the other guys having problems.
