: Newb needs some advice!

Hey guys. I'm thinking about picking up an 84 M1009 CUCV Blazer. Started talking to the guy here and there about the truck and then got an e-mail from him the other day that read:

"Well, my wife went to start it to move it the other day and held the ignition for to long, so I had the starter rebuilt, it still won't start so I will be replacing the start switch to a 200 volt relay. If that doesn't do the trick then the glow plugs need to be replaced which is something I don't really want to get into."

Now, can anyone tell me how simply holding the ignition key for too long can render a military CUCV inoperable? I don't know anything about diesels (yet) but in a gas engine if you keep the key held to "start" too long I guess it could damage the starter gear and flywheel.

Can anyone give me some idea as to what happened here so I can help this guy get the truck running so I, in turn, can go buy it and drive it home?

Thanks in advance for any help and keep up the great work on this forum!

Don't buy that truck or if you do offer ALOT less than original asking price. I had a cracked flywheel and could still start. Maybe just burned a fusible link going to the starter solenoid but holy smokes.
I can't imagine it has anything to do with glowplugs.
Is the truck not turning over or is it not firing? If she burned out the starter it might not turn fast enough for combustion ( you need about 500 RPM or so for these trucks to start).
Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think there's anything on this truck that comes close to 200v that you'd need a relay like that for. starter is 24 volts on military but that's the highest any of these trucks get (i think)
Anyway something sounds fishy to me. I'd offer the guy a few hundred bucks and tow it away for him. who knows what happened?

I asked him that, he didn't answer the question and said he never had a chance to tinker with it since the first time he told me about the problem.

He was asking $1500 for the truck BEFORE all this happened. I offered him $800 cash and he turned it down, said he'd keep the truck.

I don't want to be doing business with an a-hole like that anyway. Good riddance CUCV. Hoping to find another one that cheap! Thanks for the input anyways smackzed.

I think you made a good descision. $1500 would be a decent price for something that runs but not running? who knows what you'd be up against. If he didn't jump at $800 you're better off.
Then again if he'd jumped at $800 ther'd probably be something really wrong.
Those CUCV's can be really good trucks tho. From what I've read some people get them at auction for $300 - $500 in as is condition, the same that that other truck was in.
Hope you find something you like.

Central New York. If any of you guys know "Jason Duramax", I'm his brother.

Dstang, I've seen you around on Steel Soldiers before, right?

Yeah I go on there a lot. Very good people over there. that knows these things inside and out. There is one in ct for 1500 that looks rust free.

I picked up a m1008 and m1009 this year locally
