: Truck wiring
Michael156 06-09-2005, 07:50 PM Hey Guys,
Probably been asked a million times on here but here it goes again.
Just purchased a 2005 D/A 3500 Dually. It did come with the heavy duty trailer package and the camper wiring for the 5th wheel.
I am looking at the prodigy brake controller and as simple as that is just plug in under dash and plug into the controller. Or hard wire it with supplied harness. I have the 2 batteries under the hood so should I NOT put the 40 amp fuse in the #1 spot under the hood ?? Or do I ??
Also what is the 4 prong plug for ?? The plug in the back of the truck has 7 -as did all my past ones.
I am also looking to wire the truck for a 5th wheel - I do not use a tag trailer. Is there any special way to do this - I see the wiring under the bed between the cab and the bed. I would rather not cut a hole into the bed. Does anyone have any interesting ways they have set this up. Does the wiring under the bed have a connector on it or are all the wires just wraped up and you have to hard wire them.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
ssduramax 06-09-2005, 07:58 PM i read on here somewhere that you need to put the fuse in or it wont charge your fifth wheel trailer batery IIRC.
the 4 prong plug is a adapter so you can plug in the 4 prong flat, say, for your boat trailer or something like that. all you will get out of that is the lights, no brakes.
i am also interested in any unique setups for the bundle of wires under the bed.
hope this helped a little.
dieseljockey 06-09-2005, 09:54 PM At my work, I regularly install brake controllers in pickups, including quite a few Chevys. I always put the fuse in the place that has the red plug in it. As of yet it has always worked just fine.

idahofox 06-09-2005, 10:55 PM My truck came with the camper/5th wheel wiring harness. I unwound the coil and brought it forward of the wheel well, into the void between outside/inside bed sheet metal, more than enough length. The ends of the wires were sealed with a plastic cap, I removed this cap.
I purchased a 7 pin receptacle form NAPA, and using a hole saw, (the one for wooden doors; saws thin sheet metal just fine.) placed my receptacle between inner wheel shape and the front of the box. Wired up the receptacle just like the receptacle by the receiver.
It's that simple.
Yes you need the fuse to charge the trailer battery(ies).
Prodigy is Plug In Play for our trucks.

Hope this helps.

WanaDmxsub 06-09-2005, 11:24 PM The reference to 2 batteries is for the gassers. If you want the truck to charge your RV batteries you need to install the fuse.
Michael156 06-09-2005, 11:48 PM thanks for the info about the fuse. Funny how things have changed over the years. Takes more time to get the mail from your mailbox now than it will to set up this brake controller.
I have read on here that people are also making a special adapter and plugging it into the normal tag trailer at the rear of the truck and running the wires in the space between the tailgate and pluggin into the gooseneck harness that way. Anyone think this is stupid to do ??
Johnswiftm 06-10-2005, 09:55 PM I install trailer hitches and accy. we always drill a 2" hole low in the back stae pocket. If you are looking for a factory looking plug get the Draw-tite PN 20023. Also let you know that Cequent Towing ( who owns draw-tite,reese, and hidden hitch) also owns taconsa brake controls. They make a direct plug in wiring for the brake control with no splicing also. It is p/n 18284 for draw-tite

How do you get the Camper wiring harness to/into the "Back Stake Pocket"? To short !
Why into a "Stake Pocket", the wiring is exposed in the bed?
You have me Corn Fused.

idahofox 06-11-2005, 12:33 AM Your 5th wheel/gooseneck harness normally has a 7 pin plug, unless its been modified.

Adapting What, (7pin plug/7pin receptical)?
.... and running the wires in the space between the tailgate and ....
Between the Tailgate and....What, the bed? Not on my truck. You will not find the "Pigtail" draped Over my Tailgate either. -:t
These are Class Trucks, do a Class Instalation.
End of

Johnswiftm 06-11-2005, 03:58 PM You put a 7 way car end in the back stake pocket to plug the trailer into the plug you mounted into the stake pocket.

How do you get the wiring To the stake pocket, it short on its own?

Michael156 06-11-2005, 07:14 PM This might sound like a dumb question - but what and where is the stake pocket ???
Majuba Max 06-11-2005, 08:18 PM i plug my 5ver in the back by the tailer hitch works justy fine thier
Johnswiftm 06-11-2005, 10:08 PM If you look at the kit Draw-Tite PN 20023 you will notice it has a 7 wire cable with a molex plug on it. It also has a 7 way car end that looks like what you have on the hitch. If you have the heavy duty towing package on your truck once you drill the hole you feed the wires underneath and hook them to the wiring harness on the truck that runs back foward and dead ends. This is what that harness is for. Then you connect the car end to the molex plug and mount it in the stake pocket with 4 screws. Then you do not have to run the cable over the tailgate. Go to www.draw-tite.com (http://www.draw-tite.com) to look at the parts:think:

Lots more work than required for mine. See my post above.

Stake Pocket's are openings in the top rail of the bed, about the size of a 2X4 (Stake).

Johnswiftm 06-12-2005, 10:53 PM It only takes about 10 minutes to do the job. Sure beats paying 400 to repaint the tailgate from the cable doesn't it?
idahofox 06-12-2005, 11:31 PM My cable (pigtail) doesn't come anywhere near my tailgate.

NUDIESEL 06-13-2005, 07:00 AM Very cool set-up of the 5th wheel plug.
Johnswiftm 06-13-2005, 06:32 PM Sorry idahofox I just miss understood what you were saying. What we do where I work at is the same idea but in the rear stakepocket post near the bottom of the bed. The wires feed down thru where the tailight harness feeds up.
