Does anyone know if a 12 valve cummins will fit in a 67-72 chevy or gmc truck. Its my favorite body style of truck. I would love to use a duramax but they are expensive You can find a 12 valve cummins fairly reasonable and are excellent engines. I was thing of building a twin turbo for it. It would be my ultimate puller. I was thinking of doing something like this to be different and it wouldnt cost as much as buying a new duramax like I want. Everything is easy to find for the project. I was just wandering if a cummins would fit. If not maybe a 8100 would fit nicely. I would like to keep it diesel. Its hard to beat the sound and of coarse the black smoke.

We has one in my brothers 67 K20 but never finished it. Idea got scrapped for a D-Max :D. Cummins was kinda long but otherwise fit decent. We set it up with a Cummins, GM nv4500 with a Cummins input and bellhousing and a GM 205 t-case from an 88 1ton.

Is there enough room for the intercooler? It doesnt look like there is much room in the engine bay. Owell, I guess we might have to find out. I should just do a duramax conversion. I know they will fit. Owell. The cummins fits my budget a little better. Nothing against the duramax.

That would be sweet. But it take alot of work. I would need to find a wrecked truck to do that. Never know. I might decide to go that route.

I don't see any reason that you couldn't get the Cummins in one, but I might not be the right person to be getting input from. :D

Also, if you pay attention and are patient a Duramax swap can be "affordable"
I bought an '05 LLY/Allison/261XHD with 90K with all of the accessories except the Alt. from one guy and the entire harness, ECM, TCM, BCM, Power distribution center, alt., glow plug controller, all the battery cables, and the instrument cluster from another. I have a grand total $2,339 in everything so far and I have the 261XHD to sell, because I'm not using it with my application. With what I get out of that transfer case and the 6.5/4L80E I pulled from my truck I will come very close to breaking even.

I've seen pics of several 67-72's with cummins engines both IC and non IC. And IIRC, there was a company a while back advertising in DP mag that made motor mounts so its pretty much a bolt on affair.

As much as I like Dmax's, I have to say a 12V is the way to go on a tight budget. :)

It's been done. Not by me, though. There are pics around. Ppl put 5.9's in anything and everything.

The I/C would have to go between the grill and radiator support. No room in engine compartment :(. If I do another solid axle Chevy with a Cummins I'll just go non-I/C.

Why not put a 4bt in it. You'll have a lot more room and plenty of power. You'd also get great mileage.

Agreed, I had thought of putting a 4BT in mine at one point and ended up going a different route. A friend recently put one in his similarly built S10 and it vibrates terribly at idle. Good little engines though.

Very interesting idea.

Yes the little 4cyl cummins vibrates alot more than the 6cyl. And you just can get the power out of 4 cylinders versus the 6 cylinder.

You can get 2/3 the power of a 6bt from the 4bt :). They are available with balance shafts, but I think a 6bt would be the way to go.

Well I'm thinking of not using the cummins. I found a place on the internet that you can buy totaled vehicles fair reasonable. If I decide to do this, I can buy a complete truck and all I have to really buy is a front axle off a ford truck. I would use almost every thing in the drivetrain except the front end. It would half to be a straight axle. I'll keep it an automatic with the allison. Then I could use other parts as well; hydraulic brakes, guage cluster, steer column, wiring harness, etc. I think I would use a lb7 just for the simplicity of the engine. Not as much electronics and emissions on it. I think it would fit much better than the longer cummins. It shouldn't be much bigger than a big block. It would be so much quieter also.

$23000 seems like a lot. You can buy a nice duramax for that. Thanks for posting in it. I know now how the cummins would fit. Its a tight fit it looks like.

You can get the duramax to fit without doing anything to the frame all you have to do is cut out alot of the firewall. I'm doing it now and it is going good. It's not a 4x4 but I think it would be easier with a 4x4 because you can do a body lift on the truck to give yourself alot more room.

I'm purchasing a 71 chevy short box on sunday and was thinking these same thoughts as everyone here. I comes with a 5 speed chevy trans and I keep thinking that when I swap the trans in I want to put in a diesel motor too. I'm not looking for really big hp, just something fun and gets great mileage. I keep thinking 6 cylinder cummins because they are cheap and easy to find but I would love to have a d max in it. I'm definitely keeping the manual trans though so we'll see what I end up with. It's already got a good 350 in it so I'll probably just work on updating the truck this year and engine swap next year.
