First off Im not new to diesels(I work on them) but I am new to owning one, and I never noticed that there are two pumps at my local Hess station.

One just says diesel, and it has the ULSD sticker on the pump

The other pump says Diesel #2, and also has the ULSD sticker on the pump

my question is what is the difference and what should I be putting in my 04 D-max?

I am assuming the pump that says "diesel" is "diesel #1" is this assumtion correct?

Thanks

Jon

That is what I would presume as well, however around here if they AREN'T marked than they are #2, and they are marked for being #1. Do the people at the cashier counter know? Pretty much all any more is going to be ULSD, but you should be good with mostly if not all #2 in it....

there was a time a couple of years ago when the "regular" diesel was still available and some of the "new" vehicles being sold "had to run on USLD". some areas were also still able to get "off road" diesel fuel. neither is available in today's fuel market. all you can get is the USLD. now as for the particular pump you have in ??? look at the size of the hose and nozzle; I would bet that one is the smaller 3/4" "car" line; while the other is the 1-1/4" "big truck" line.

The people at the counter have no clue, and all the pumps have the "big truck" lines.....

There isn't supposed to be any - BUT, I would watch what the rigs use and follow suit. The fuel turn-over for rigs is more frequent than the auto diesel if they pump from different tanks.

The local truck stop has 4 choices including farm red die and Bio...... Have to watch what you are pumping.......

Are the prices the same?

If they are, I'd bet they're both #2.

#1 generally costs more. It's very closely related to kerosene.

Yeah that is what I was going to ask. Is the price the same? My guess is that its #1 if its more expensive.

# 1 is a winter blend , it is better in extreme cold but will yield less fuel milage ,virtually every fuel sold at a public accessable station is fine to use in all of our trucks, I personally run # 2 and if it is cold enough to worry about gelling run some Howes or a product like it to prevent problems, #1 is generally more and likely to be found on the "car" islands but in areas where weather is a factor it will be on the truck side as well. You will hear alot of people complain of a milage drop in winter and #1 winter blend diesel is usually the culprit.

I get my fuel from Hess and all the pumps say ULSD. The only difference I see is the pump handle that has a bigger diameter for the big rigs.

. . .

Just to be a wise-ass, I was going to say the difference is . . . the stickers ! !

I guess the chances of there being a different diesel at the pumps could depend on where you are, but I would expect #1 diesel would be clearly labeled. And only someplace pretty cold.

Actually, I put in some diesel up in Alaska from a pump that I then saw was labeled #1. But it was summer and the truck ran the same, so it really was #2.

What should you use? Given a choice, you'd like to be pumping LSD #2 but it's not available.

Second choice is ULSD #2 with some bio (maybe B5-B20) unless it's really cold, then skip the bio and use additives (I use Power Service Diesel Kleen because it's relatively cheap at Walmart; others have their favorites). No bio near me, so I just use ULSD #2 with PS (gray because it's not cold in So. Calif.).
